Fanney Khan Movie Review - This Fanney Khan Lacks Fun
Fanney Khan lacks fun, charm and it is one of the worst movies to have come out recently. It is the story of an obese girl who wants to be a singing phenomenon. His dad leaves no stone unturned for making her daughters dream come true and in his desperation, he kidnaps a well-known singer.
Cast - Rajkummar Rao, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Anil Kapoor, Divya Dutta, Pihu Sand, Girish Kulkarni, Swati Semwal
Directed By - Atul Manjrekar
Genre - Musical, Comedy, Drama
Fanney Khan is the story of Prashant Kumar (Anil Kapoor), a well-known singer and entertainer of his gully who once had a dream of becoming a singer like Mohammad Rafi but due to some circumstances, he was not able to do so. His dreams do revive again in the form of his daughter Lata (Pihu Sand) whom he wants to see as a great singer like Lata Mangeshkar. But due to her overweight figure, her body is given more "importance" and not her voice. Prashant doesn't give up on his dream, and in his desperate attempts, he kidnaps Baby Singh (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan) with the help of his co-worker Adhir (Rajkummar Rao) and uses Baby as a tool to make her daughter famous.
At the beginning of the film, we are told that "Fanney Khan" is someone who entertains us and anyone who makes us laugh and make us thoroughly enjoy is known as "Fanney Khan." Sadly, this film is quite the opposite of what it says, and it seriously gets very hard to bear after some time. Fanney Khan can be described as a combination of Dangal and Secret Superstar but with zero creativity, content and vision. Directed by the debutant Atul Manjrekar, it is based on the 2000 Belgian satirical comedy film Everybody's Famous! by Dominique Deruddere. Dominique's film was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 73rd Academy Awards and although I have not watched it but given the fact that it was an Oscar nominee and Fanney Khan is based on it, my mind just boggles as to how they managed to make a movie so bad when the source material was so acclaimed. All the judges in the film are stereotypical, and none of them seem to have a good heart, it's like the director hates the singing reality TV shows and hence, he is showing his rage in the film. During it's first few minutes, the change from one scene to the other feels very abrupt and disconnected as it feels like the director has thrown in random shots in the movie.
If all these things are not enough then there is also this big over dramatic and cringy climax which facepalm's your way, it's very atrocious and funny not in a good way of course. The film disrespects both the audience in the reel world and also in the real world by showing us that very horrible climax where on one side there is this reality show going on, and on the other side, there is a Crime Patrol like episode going on with a character.
Fanney Khan also proves that sometimes for the sake of money, actors need to do films like these which lack logic and credibility. I think it was Rajkummar Rao who was kidnapped and made to do this film. He gives his best in whatever way possible but fails to make an impact. Actually, that statement is valid for all the actors in this movie be it Divya Dutta, Pihu Sand or Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. All of them are excellent actors and gave there best in the movie, but none of them were able to successfully leave a mark or make an impact on the audience. Pihu Sand's character, in particular, was very annoying even more than the bad guys in the film. She is embarrassed by her father's behavior and behaves disrespectfully with him for which no explanation is given whatsoever. If I were to behave like her with my father then definitely I would get a hard thrashing from him. For me, it was Anil Kapoor who again managed to shine in an otherwise crappy film (remember Race 3?). The scenes involving him breaking down were well delivered by him and felt real. I even thought he was crying so genuinely because of the fact he was made to do films like Race 3 and now Fanney Khan.
Fanney Khan being a musical lacks a memorable soundtrack and being a comedy lacks some good laughs. Don't expect logic out of it or even entertainment as it fails to provide both of them. By chance, if you still go ahead with this film then cherish the song "Badan Pe Sitare" at the beginning performed by Anil Kapoor and sung by Sonu Nigam as it may be the only best thing you would see on screen in the whole film.
