Hereditary Movie Review - When Family Is A Curse
A grief-stricken Graham family experiences supernatural elements after the death of there grandmother. Ari Aster's directorial debut is a masterclass horror film that will leave you shocked, disturbed and uneasy.
Cast - Toni Collette, Alex Wolff, Milly Shapiro, Ann Dowd, Gabriel Byrne
Directed By - Ari Aster
Genre - Horror, Thriller, Drama
The movie starts with a written invitation on the screen which invites the audiences and the characters in the film to the funeral of Ellen, Annie's (Toni Collette) grandmother. Annie gives a eulogy which tells us that this mother-daughter relationship was not so smooth and there were difficulties between them. Soon after this funeral, something sinister starts taking over the Graham family which at its very best can be described as living hell. This is more than enough for you to know as the movie is enjoyed at its very best if we have less knowledge about it. I will keep this review spoiler free as despite it having a worldwide release, the film was not available for screening at many places and in India, it was brutally censored. So let's dive into the hell.
Hereditary was first premiered on January 21, 2018, in the Midnight section at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival. Since then, the critics had gone crazy about this film going as far as calling it "this generations The Exorcist". This kind of hype can be dangerous for a movie as then it generates a lot of expectations around it, and the audiences are generally let down by all this generated hype. Many viewers were disappointed by this film, and many did also enjoy it. I come into the latter category as not only I enjoyed it but also loved it. To say it's the best horror movie of this decade is also an understatement for this film as it indeed has all the ingredients which a horror film must have and the great old classics like Rosemary's Baby and The Exorcist had.
Aster loved the classics, and it is evident that he had studied them and understood what made them great. He applied his research into this film and hence it is no wonder that he successfully created a horror masterpiece. I am a big fan of the horror genre, the excitement and fear a horror movie generates are inexplicable and intoxicating. Those shadows in the dark hiding sinister apparitions underneath there sleeves do scare the shit out of me, and I enjoy visiting that experience again and again. Given the same old tropes and cliches that today's horror films follow, Hereditary comes as a breath of fresh air as it rejects all the cliches and shines out in the dark.
This movie impresses with its direction as the camera takes us inside Annie's skillfully and painstakingly created miniature house (a replica of her own house) and tries to tell us about a greater (here demonic) being like Annie controlling the members of its miniature house. This interpretation gives a brilliant explanation about a wave of light which is frequently seen in the movie. The light may be a reflection of the lens that one wears while making these miniatures. The eerie music by Colin Stetson breaks you down and races your heartbeat, making you to grab something tightly. Pawel Pogorzelski's cinematography makes sure you don't miss seeing anything in the dark and frightens you by capturing the raw brutality of the film.
This comes from the A24 studios who had also given us other horror movies like It Comes At Night and the very underrated and thrilling The Witch. A24 proves yet again that they are here and won't let this genre die anytime soon. The kind of movies they keep on the tables are exceptional, different and unique. They understand what it takes to makes a real horror film.
Toni Collette is freaking mind-blowing in the film, and the Academy should nominate her for this year's Best Actress category. She smiles, breaks down and loses control in the most natural way possible. Alex Wolff was pretty amazing and in a very shocking scene in the film makes us go numb with his exceptional performance. Milly Shapiro makes sure you get scared the next time you hear the sound of a tongue clicking. She even eats chocolate weirdly and has a strange aura around her. Gabriel Byrne as Annie's husband is the only one who is mentally stable and tries to maintain peace among the family members. He too was fantastic and looked like an old and retired Liam Neeson. The main reason why all the performances worked was because of the fact that the actors understood their parts and knew what to do on screen. It is this understanding between the actors and the director that this film achieved a great milestone.
Hereditary is also something more than a horror film. It breaks down the human psychology and emphasises on the communication that must be present between the members of the family. The unspoken words may prove to be dangerous, and in this case, it takes a sinister turn which proves to be fatal for the Graham family. The less you speak, the more the feelings accumulate leading to a hazardous showdown.
But of course this is a horror film, and horror is subjective. People have there different interpretations of horror, and that is the main reason why horror films are so divided between the critics and the audiences or between the audiences or between the critics. You may not find this film as scary as I did but it will creep you out to some extent, and for the love of horror alone, I think it deserves to be watched as it is not every day you get a horror film so beautifully made that it sends shivers down your spine with its disturbing content and human analysis.
