Satyameva Jayate Movie Review - Return Of The 80's

A man wanting to free the city of corruption decides to punish all the corrupt cops in town by burning them alive. Satyameva Jayate revives the 80's era of cinema and not for good.

Cast - John Abraham, Manoj Bajpayee, Amruta Khanvilkar, Aisha Sharma

Directed By - Milap Milan Zaveri

Genre - Action, Thriller

Vir (John Abraham) is an artist during the day and a vigilante during the night. The opening shots reveal his killing method which is by burning his victims alive who comprise of corrupt cops. Naturally, the police start their investigations on finding this vigilante who looks more like a psycho killer after some time. When they get unsuccessful in their attempts, they call DCP Shivansh Rathod (Manoj Bajpayee) who leaves his vacation mid-way and comes back to hunt down the vigilante.

Satyameva Jayate brings back the 80's revenge drama filled with cliches and cringe. Director Milap Zaveri known for making the very forgetful Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai (2010), and Mastizaade (2016) has also written the dialogues for this film. Going by the tagline of this movie - Beimaan Pitega Corruption Mitega - I got an idea about the dialogues of this film and hence was barely surprised by lines like "Kanoon ko haath mein lene ka haq sirf kanoon ko hai" or "Kachde ko insaaf nii milta, kachda sirf saaf hota hai". But the dialogues are just a part of this big mess of a movie which proudly wears a badge of patriotism masking a big dumb plot underneath.

Let's start with the direction, Zaveri has imitated the direction of this movie like those old Bollywood films featuring unnecessary cuts and weird camera movements that make you cringe. Of course, I was not expecting anything groundbreaking from this director as I had seen and dismissed his previous films, but here, he severely dumbs things down reducing this film to a sheer disgrace. I am seriously not exaggerating when I say that this is one of the worst movies of this year and joins the list along with Race 3. I heard some people were comparing it with John's previous film Parmanu; these people need a checkup. I admit that I didn't enjoy Parmanu that much but when compared to this, Parmanu feels a lot better and well made.

Coming to the background score of this film, it is seriously very very loud. The chants that go on and on in the background whenever our hero burns a cop on screen really hurts your ears. A scene involving Shivansh Rathod shouting at Vir on the phone has his voice go up so loud that you almost put your hands on your ears or you start laughing at the absurdity of the scene.

Which brings me to the performances, so John Abraham with his chiselled body and packs look super hot and amazing to look at, but that does very little in favour of his performance. You can't help but wonder that he has been doing almost the same kinds of roles recently which rarely challenge his acting capabilities. Talking of doing the same things, Manoj Bajpayee too has been performing recurring roles lately and is seen playing as a police officer in almost every other film of his. Aisha Sharma is there in the movie playing the romantic interest having pretty eyes and perfectly shaped body. She is apparently "saved" for the film's "epic" finale which is high on melodrama and low on thrill. The other cast members are also just present in the film like cardboard characters that help in stretching the runtime of the film by giving our hero a purpose to perform some "fiery" moves.

The people at my theatre were hooting and blowing whistles (probably fans of Abraham) and I don't know whether to see it as a fact that they had a good time or feel sad that the audience still fall for this old trap and in the end, they would prefer a no-brainer masala film over good content. But judging by those whistles, I could say that this film would earn crores at the box office, and the filmmakers would continue raking in audiences money by playing with there emotions of patriotism or any other thing in which we take pride. Satyameva Jayate is like one of its song "Dilbar" which randomly comes in the film - pointless.
