Vishwaroop II (or Vishwaroopam II in Tamil) is the sequel or circumquel (happens partly before and after the former film's end) to the 2013 film Vishwaroop (or Vishwaroopam) which was also directed, written and produced by Kamal Haasan. The sequel continues the story forward with Wasim (Kamal Haasan), a RAW agent who now has to stop all the Al Qaeda terrorists and his enemy from the prequel Omar Qureshi (Rahul Bose) from attacking the city.

Back in 2013 when Vishwaroop was released, it faced a backlash from some Muslim organisation which resulted in the film from being banned in several areas. I got familiar with the movie due to this media coverage it got from the ban and hence, decided to watch the film. I remember I was very impressed by it and started eagerly waiting for the sequel which was initially planned to be released back in late 2013. But now since it has been finally released, and I have watched it, I can tell that it is in no way as good and exciting as its prequel, but it is also in no way a bad film.

The movie has all the necessary masala ingredients which the audience would find exciting - some over-the-top action sequences, excellent performances from the cast and the stunning Kamal Haasan. It is a watchable film by all means, and you can enjoy it from the beginning to the end without getting bored. It refreshes the memory of the audiences by giving a recap first in writing and then by showing some scenes from the previous films which were somewhat similar to the opening credits of Baahubali 2: The Conclusion. But there Rajamouli wanted us to connect the dots of the prior film, and here Haasan uses it to just serve as a recap. The film uses Wasim's dream sequences to take us into his past and some events from the prequel. I had watched Vishwaroop only once at the time of its release, but I got back some memory of the film while watching the flashback scenes in this sequel.

Kamal Haasan as Wasim gives his best to the film and is no doubt the highlight here. He fights and breaks bones of his enemies in style all the while getting seduced by his gorgeous wife Nirupama (Pooja Kumar) who initially is seen getting jealous by the impressive and kick-ass Ashmita (Andrea Jeremiah). Ashmita who we get to know as once being a colleague of Wasim in the Army during one of the flashback sequences now most of the time likes to pull Wasim's leg or tease him in front of his wife. Shekhar Kapur as Colonel Jagannath is the tough guy with a soft heart who hides his feeling from other people and almost has a calm expression on his face which doesn't let us know what must be going on in his mind. Rahul Bose with his robotic and low voice with Jaideep Ahlawat (as Salim) all reprise their roles from the prequels and do their jobs perfectly.

A scene in the film which takes place after the interval has Wasim and his mother (Waheeda Rehman) depicting a beautiful bond between a mother and a son. His mother has Alzheimer which is a medical condition where the patient loses his memory. It is a beautiful scene, one beyond the words which could not be described in any language. The purity and love in that one scene will move you with tears in your eyes and a pain in your heart, definitely the only memorable scene in the entire movie.

Coming to the issues, I think whenever any action is about take place in the film, it becomes predictable and feels artificial. You can almost see that the shooting has been done on a green screen which takes away the authenticity from it. The film fails to deliver technically during some action sequences involving cars. The action scenes are shot smartly, but sadly it's not memorable enough to take away with you. The set pieces look like a tool to execute some high octane sequences and are too much in the face losing subtlety. The plot also has nothing new to offer and is something you would have seen in many other films of this genre. The villain's affinity towards the nuclear attacks has gotten too old to have been recycled for a long time.

In the end, Vishwaroop II despite its flaws is enjoyable, and overall I had a good time watching it. It is in no way as good and thrilling as its prequel, but it would not bite to watch it at least once. This will inevitably turn out to be a treat for all the Kamal Haasan fans.
