Sorry to Bother You Movie Review - As Crazy As It Gets
Director Boots Riley's film about a telemarketer's rise to fame is weird and a whole lot of fun. A cross-breed of genre's, this one is ridiculously funny and engaging.

Boots Riley's Sorry to Bother You, which he has both written and directed, is a perfect example of a film in which a general concept can be taken and then moulded into something hilarious and extraordinary. It is basically about a telemarketer named Cassius Green or Cash (Lakeith Stanfield) who does not have what his name represents, which is cash. He works at RegalView company and has a hard time selling to customers until one day he learns about "white voice" from his co-worker and then using it, he starts becoming a very successful person. In fact, he gets promoted to become a "Power Caller", a mysterious position in the company.
At its core, this movie is all about greed and lust for money and how that crave to become a successful person destroys you eventually. This is not something fresh or new, but the way Riley handles the subject at hand is fascinating to witness. It starts as something "seen-before" and then turns into a whole lot of crazy things you would have not even seen coming. There are plenty of jokes and comic moments here and thankfully, all of them land. This is a hilarious film which doesn't let it's serious issue to come out as gut-wrenching and makes sure you get the message it wants to tell all the while by having fun watching it. Its treatment reminded me of BlacKkKlansman where also the film was made entertaining so that the audience enjoys it and at the same time, gets to know about something socially relevant in today's time.
The editing here is one of the best I have seen in a while. The scenes where Cash talks to the customers are edited wonderfully. Terel Gibson has really done a fantastic job here. Doug Emmett's cinematography gives a colourful voice to this film which makes it gorgeous to look at. Hats off to Boots Riley for his writing and direction. This is his directorial debut, and he has done a fantastic job. We have seen some great new talents this year like Ari Aster and now Boots Riley who with there debut itself have proven there worth and expertise with respect to directing a feature film. It's good news for the cinephiles as the future is in great hands.
Known for working in films like Get Out, The Purge: Anarchy and Death Note, Lakeith Stanfield gives a brilliant performance here. His portrayal of a character who tastes success and then disgusts it after learning the truth is on-point. He is expressive and lives it like he has experienced it. He is also a rapper, and if you know this about him, then you may laugh at a joke in the film where people in a party cheer for him to rap. Tessa Thompson as the supporting girlfriend having a passion for art was as usual a delight to watch. Watch out for her quirky long earrings which everybody seems to admire oddly. You may remember her as Valkyrie from the superhero film Thor: Ragnarok. Steven Yeun as Squeeze and Jermaine Fowler as Salvador, Cash's best friends were also perfect in their parts.
Sorry to Bother You is one of the insane, illogical and hilarious film to have come out this year. Look deeper, and you will see it's ludicrous representation of a society who finds a stupid viral video of more importance than something which is actually significant to them. Given the current trend, the portrayal in the film may not be far away from the actual reality. It also tells about the selfish nature of human beings and how they try to change themselves to achieve something they desire. But why is the title of the film "Sorry to Bother You"? Well, in the telemarketing business, they say this line to the customers when they call them.
