Venom Movie Review - The Slimy Friend
A person comes in contact with a symbiote which gives him superhuman abilities to do dangerous stunts and fight crimes in the city.
Cast - Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, Reid Scott, Jenny Slate
Directed By - Ruben Fleischer
Genre - Superhero, Sci-Fi, Thriller
Full disclosure that I was not very excited to watch this film and the reason were the trailers which were a huge let down for me. Nevertheless, with a ray of hope and optimism, I went ahead and watched Venom in the theatre.
Directed By Ruben Fleischer (best known for Zombieland), the film is about an investigative journalist Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) who during a mishap comes in contact with a symbiote named Venom and thus, now he has all those cool superhero abilities which allow him to climb as well as jump from the top of a building, do excellent work during chase sequences and fight like a pro. Oh yes, Eddie has a girlfriend, Anne (Michelle Williams), who like Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) from The Amazing Spider-Man 2 finds a way to fit into this scenario during the climax. The chemistry between them was equal to zero. Talking of Spider-Man, this movie also has a shady business corporation like "Oscorp" where experiments are done on living things, human beings to be accurate, and is run by our villain Carlton Drake (Riz Ahmed). Basically, it's almost similar to the Spider-Man films.
Venom has Tom Hardy in his finest form. The conversation between him and the symbiote Venom, which takes place inside his head, is entertaining to watch. His scenario is like Logan Marshall-Green's character from Upgrade where also he has conversations with some machine planted inside him. So, naturally, I was reminded of Upgrade whenever Venom and Eddie talked to each other in the film. Tom Hardy is an excellent actor, and he gives his best here. For someone playing as a villain in the movie, Riz Ahmed was barely scary and menacing, and there was no tension of any sort whenever he came on screen. You cannot blame Ahmed for this as he was remarkable and gave his best shot. He was terrific in Nightcrawler. I think the script is at fault as it didn't give him enough opportunity or lines to shine through. The action scenes were entertaining but serviceable at best, nothing breath-taking or jaw-dropping here.
Unfortunately, my nightmares came true as there is less to like here. As suspected, Venom turned out to be more of a cash grabber made purely for having a cross-over with the "Spidey" universe in the future. It's riddled with plot holes which is something almost every film is a culprit of, but with an engaging story, this is something you can forgive easily. Venom is filled with same old superhero cliches and a plot you might have seen several times before. Of course, we all know the tropes that a superhero film follows, as in the end, it's a face-off between the good and the evil and we all know how that ends. So, its the journey and the characters which should be made stronger. What we have here is a lazy repetition of the same old cycle which had a lot of potential to be something more.
For a movie featuring an entity having a long sharp teeth ready to bite anyone's head off, it should have definitely gone for an R-rating and its decision for a PG-13 rating for the sake of making it viewable for the large section of the audience gives us a proof about its motives of minting as much money as possible. Making loads of cash at the box-office is not a bad thing, but when you sacrifice art for money, then it gets ugly. Also, the next time you see a film coming from Sony, don't even bother to watch the trailers as they have revealed a crucial plot point and have also shown the ending in it. I know many audience members are going to enjoy or even love this film and that's perfectly fine. After all, everybody has different opinions for a movie or anything in general. But for me, Venom was like "A turd in the wind" as he says in the film.
