Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald Movie Review - Not So Fantastic

As Grindelwald escapes from the clutches of the MACUSA (Magical Congress of the United States of America), he plans to gather his followers and rule over the No-Majs. This is a film that will be enjoyed more by the Potterheads.

Directed By - David Yates

Genre - Fantasy, Drama

Finally, it arrives, the sequel to the 2016 Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and the tenth overall in the Wizarding World franchise - Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. I got the opportunity to watch it before its worldwide release on 16th November, so that was pretty cool. So without any spoilers let's discuss this new addition in the wizarding community.

We all know by the trailers that Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp) escapes during his flight towards the Ministry of Magic where he was to undergo trial for the crimes he had committed in the past. One of the good things about this film is that it doesn't waste any time and shows his escape during a stunning magical fight sequence at the beginning. The rest of the movie shows his plans and plottings to assemble and form his group of pure-blood wizards and witches to rule over all the No-Majs. Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) returns with his gang involving his love interest Tina Goldstein (Katherine Waterston), her sister Queenie (Alison Sudol) and her love interest; a No-Maj among the wizards and witches, Jacob Kowalski (Dan Fogler).

Returning to the director's chair is David Yates who had earlier directed the last four Harry Potter films and the previous Fantastic Beasts instalment. Yates himself is a magician of creating some beautiful shots and scenes. The aesthetics he conjures up with cinematographer Philippe Rousselot are arresting. But there was an exception for me during that early sequence involving Grindelwald's escape as that scene was too fast with several cuts and close-ups which made it sometimes harder to intercept what happened during some moments. The actors were fantastic, and Jude Law as Albus Dumbledore was on point.

Let me tell you that I watched this movie even when my exams are going on. That is the kind of love I have towards this "Potterverse", and so as an admirer of these films, I was underwhelmed by this instalment. Never in my wildest dreams had I imagined that a movie from this universe would be made as a filler for the next sequel. Even the Harry Potter films were set up for that final battle in the end, but even then every movie in that series stood on its own and never did any of them come out as something disposable. What further bummed me was that it started on a very positive and engaging note with Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and then in this sequel, it acted up like a bridge for the third instalment. From the starting itself, it starts building things one upon the other but all of that never pays off in the finale. It leaves many questions unanswered and that buildup I mentioned was made for the next series.

In its attempts to provide depth to the main characters, it ends up making a romantic subplot filled with cliches which frankly felt like the main focus of this film. The romance sparked during some key events when it was crucial for them to concentrate on the task because you know, the stakes were high. It chooses the worst time to blossom the love between Newt and Tina which becomes irritating after a time. Rather than letting the audience feel the magic, the film forces it upon us.

In the end, what you come out taking from this movie are some stunning visuals, Nagini (some cool transformations here), excellent performances and of course, Hogwarts. It's a pity that even Hogwarts felt like an element used to connect the next film which drained the magic out of it. As a fan, I was not so impressed and felt cheated. But it has its moments if only a few, which were worth admiring that kept me optimistic till the end. Alas, the magic here mostly backfired as if it came from Ron's broken wand from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

Rating - 2.5/5
