Only God Forgives Movie Review - Revisiting A Discarded Piece Of Brilliance
A man is forced to avenge his brother's death by his mother which leads him to a path of violence and redemption.

It's rare to come across a film which splits the audiences and the critics alike with some booing at it while others giving it a standing ovation. Director Nicolas Winding's Only God Forgives is that kind of movie which you will either end up loving or completely hating.
Our hero here is Julian (Ryan Gosling) who had a troubled childhood involving incest with her mother (Kristin Scott Thomas). He wants to have a healthy relationship with a prostitute named Mai (Rhatha Phongam), but given the fact how he ended growing up with his mother, he is unable to get invested in her. Some dreamlike sequences establish the cutting of his hand by a god-like character Lt. Chang (Vithaya Pansringarm) who seems to be able to take out his sword from his back which he uses to give justice to the characters in the film. The sword serves as a bearer of justice. He kills, cuts off hands and even forgives some people's. Hence, the title "Only God Forgives". The hands are an important part of this movie. They have more to tell and so many sins to clutch.
Having discussed this godly character, let's talk about Julian's mother who according to some theories suggest that she represents the devil. She forces Julian to take revenge, has sexual relationships with her sons and is very manipulative. She is evil in the purest form. Thankfully, we learn that Julian at least is not as bad as his mother and in fact, he seeks redemption for an atrocious crime that he had committed in the past.
Winding works with the cinematographer Larry Smith here. Larry is known for working with Stanley Kubrick, and they had mounted some gorgeous visuals on the screen (Eyes Wide Shut). It comes as no surprise then that this film looks so beautiful and captivating to watch on screen. They are some of the best that I had seen in a movie. This duo of Nicolas and Larry reminds me of Villeneuve and Deakins. They should work together more often as I believe the results would be strikingly impressive and fruitful to the eyes.
Only God Forgives could have avoided its deliberately slow-paced proceedings to become more engaging as it can take you out of the experience for some time. It was released in 2013 to mixed reviews from both the audiences and the critics. Even now I think many would feel the same way when watching this film. But I also believe that sometime in the future, it will go on to gain a cult status, and many would even consider it a great piece of art. For now, I do suggest you check out the movie as it does have some fantastic rich visuals to offer. Its masterful cinematography could end up teaching you things about the use of lighting's and other technical stuff if you are an aspiring filmmaker.
