Bumblebee Movie Review - The Transformers We Need
The new film in the Transformers universe is a whole lot of fun and is centred around Bumblebee as he comes to Earth to set up a base of operations where he also befriends a girl.
Cast - Hailee Steinfeld, John Cena, Jorge Lendeborg Jr., Dylan O'Brien
Directed By - Travis Knight
Genre - Sci-Fi, Action
Bumblebee is the sixth instalment in the Transformers film series, and as the title suggests, it follows Bumblebee (Dylan O'Brien) as he is sent to Earth because of the attack on Cybertron by the Decepticons. He has to set up a base of operations on Earth, and between all this, he becomes friends with Charlie (Hailee Steinfeld), a teenage girl with family issues and no friends. Together they ride and fight and fill up the loneliness in their lives.
This is the first time a Transformers movie doesn't come off as a hard action CGI porn. The fight sequences have a purpose and don't just go on and on without a rhythm. It took them five films to realise their mistakes. The colour grading is perfect here and not over saturated. Its the story and not the never-ending fights and chases that drive the movie and also, no sexualised female lead. You replace Michael Bay, and you get everything right.
Charlie is one of the most likeable characters on screen this year. She is passionate about cars and expects it as a birthday gift from her family. But all she gets is a disappointment in the form of a helmet and a book. So when she finds Bumblebee as a yellow Volkswagen Beetle and comes to know about his true identity, what she gets is a car and a friend, a double surprise on her birthday."It's my birthday" she exclaims smiling with joy. As for Bumblebee, he gets someone who understands him on this human-populated world where anyone else would put him in a laboratory and dismantle him.
The chemistry between Charlie and Bumblebee is heartwarming. Hailee Steinfeld, who recently had voiced for the character of Gwen Stacy in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, was startling to watch here. It is tough for actors when they are surrounded by green screens and have to express their feelings with someone made up of CGI. Steinfeld in this aspect has done a fabulous job of acting with something unreal in front of her and whats more appreciative is the fact that she sells it. You believe every emotion and every tear that flows out from that adorable face — a fine actress in every aspect. The CGI work done on Bumblebee is also cool and impressive especially his big blue eyes that melt your heart whenever they look at you or camera or any character. Charlie's parents and her coworker Memo (Jorge Lendeborg Jr.) had less to do but were admirable in their parts. John Cena is also "not seen" for most of the time and is here mainly for comic relief and to make up some hurdles for the characters for the sake of progression. He was enjoyable to watch and did a good job.
For the fans, this is the moment of joy as they get what they wanted from these movies for a very long time. It is definitely better if not the best from all the previous Transformers films. Director Travis Knight has made up a sweet popcorn ride that can be enjoyed by all even if you have no idea or knowledge whatsoever of the other previous instalments in the franchise. In this cold winter season, it will make you feel warm from the inside.
