Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse Movie Review - More Spiders, More Responsibilities
An accelerator opens up different dimensions which give rise to the "Spider-Verse" where many different versions of Spider-Man pop out and team together to save the day.
Cast - Shameik Moore, Jake Johnson, Chris Pine, Hailee Steinfeld, Mahershala Ali, Brian Tyree Henry, Lily Tomlin, John Mulaney, Kimiko Glenn, Nicolas Cage, Liev Schreiber, Luna Lauren Velez
Directed By - Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, Rodney Rothman
Genre - Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Animation
Our friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man yet again gets an origin story, but this time he shares it with his fellow Spider-People's. Also this time, it is Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) on which the story is mainly focused. This is his origin story after all. As for Peter Parker, well he is there to tutor him so that Miles could use his powers properly. But there are others too like Gwen Stacy/Spider-Woman (Hailee Steinfeld), Peni Parker (Kimiko Glenn), Spider-Noir (Nicolas Cage) and my favourite among all, Peter Porker/Spider-Ham (John Mulaney) who got bitten by a radioactive pig. They all come together due to a particle accelerator and now have to fight the villain(s) to save the city and then to go back to there respective dimensions.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is what you get when you literally adopt a comic book on to the screen. It is like a comic book but played in a video format. You see the spidey sense tingling while the words are slammed during a fight or a conversation. The animation style employed here is jaw-dropping and something spectacular that you would have seen in recent times. The endless rows of colourful buildings and school corridors were delightful to look at. The 3D further popped them out enhancing the experience, but with its hypnotic style and movement, you really don't need it as it can be equally enjoyed well in 2D.
Superhero movies are now focusing more on the man who possesses the power instead of the power he possesses. Spider-Man has had worst encounters in life like the death of his loved ones, breakup and between all this, his struggle to make the city crime free and also trying to maintain a normal secret life, he has faced and come out of them all. In this film, Miles Morales is a regular school going kid who one day becomes Spider-Man and now has to deal with all these sudden changes in his body and life. Like many teenagers, he feels embarrassed to say "I Love You" to his dad, has some daddy issues and wants to have that one female friend in his life. When he becomes Spider-Man, he tries to prove his worth and wants everyone to believe in him.
Into the Spider-Verse will probably go down as one of the best Spider-Man films of all time. It has the appeal that would make every fan go mad with excitement, and for others, it will be a visual treat that would shock them with its outstanding storytelling and design. Never does it become too dark or too juvenile with random jokes. You don't need to know much about Spider-Man's origin to enjoy this movie. There is even a recap explaining his background and previous Spider-Man films that provides the necessary information to you in the beginning. This flashback sequence comes every time whenever a new Spidey character comes on screen.
Spider-Man is a very relatable character with real problems. It's not his superpowers but his love for his friends and families and the determination to overcome any obstacle in his way that makes him a real superhero. Miles Morales is a hearty addition to the franchise and is everything that makes this superhero more loving and friendly. This Spider-Man swings in with a lot of fun, self-awareness and enjoyment.
