"The world has enough for everyone's need, but not for everyone's greed". Tumbbad opens with this quote from Mahatma Gandhi which addresses the greed present inside every human being. It aptly fits with the plot and the characters of the film. It opens with a lore informing us about the Goddess of Prosperity who loved her firstborn named Hastar. The love was so deep that she saved him from the attack of other Gods and Goddesses when Hastar stole all the wealth and was about to take food. But he was saved on a condition that no one would ever worship him and his name will disappear from the history. After this prologue, the rest of the film is shown by dividing it into a three-part chapter which begins in 1918 and ends a little after the independence.

For the most of the time, the village of Tumbbad is seen drenched in heavy rain because Vinayak's (Sohum Shah) ancestors decided to worship Hastar. The rain falls like a curse thrown by the angry Gods. The black sky and the lonely atmosphere surrounding the village sends a chill down your spine. It looks beautiful and scary at the same time. Not many people are seen except for the main characters which gave a feeling of extreme isolation from the surrounding environment and helped in elevating the scary sequence that followed in the beginning. You sit with a firm grip, and a racing heart as the handheld camera and close-ups make you uneasy and rarely let you take a rest. But this "biting-your-nails" experience doesn't come with the presence of a supernatural entity.

Movies like Rosemary's Baby and Tumbbad scare me more than the others in the horror genre which mostly involve a ghostly apparition. These films deal with the real world horror involving our fellow homo sapiens. They go to greater heights concerning human psychology, providing deep insights into there monstrous minds. Take Tumbbad for instance; it deals with greed and how one can go to greater lengths in order to fulfil their selfish desires. It can push a human off the edge and turn him into a full-fledged monster, one who can even dominate the supernatural entity. Greed is one of the seven deadly sins which gives rise to lust and wrath here. Tumbbad presents these ideas to us, and it scared the hell out of me. It terrifies the audience by digging deep inside the mind of its protagonist Vinayak as we helplessly see him grow into a greedy human being. We are told that this "quality" in him is derived from his ancestors.

Mother is worshipped both in her holy and human form. She gives a new life from her womb. The womb of Goddess (a cave inside a well) in Tumbbad's mansion has plenty of gold coins. You go in and come out with royalty and riches as if you are reborn. Of course, there are risks involved, one that could take your life.

This is one of those rare films where everybody performs excellently. From the child actors to the adults, not even a single one felt out of place or underutilised which is just another great accomplishment out of many others which not every film can achieve.

There is a scene where Vinayak's son asks him, "Tumbbad mein kya hai?" (What is there in Tumbbad?). Well, Tumbbad has arresting visuals which are best enjoyed on a big screen, its amazing soundtrack mixes with the eeriness of the atmosphere to provide an experience which would haunt you for quite some time. A scene towards the end where a character sacrifices himself while the other lights a matchstick is filmed in slow motion. It's one of those shots that inspires the cinephile in me to try to take a peep inside the director's mind as to how he makes decisions regarding the filming of a shot. That shot alone has been stuck in my head along with other breathtaking things that I leave for you to find out.  Although, Tumbbad leaves many questions unanswered, but in the end, you don't care much for them as it fulfils its task in providing a cinematic experience with an original concept which is something very rare nowadays. It's currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video, so you know where to check in. In the age of cut, copy and paste, Tumbbad stands out with its originality.
