Climax Movie Review - A Cinematic Hypnosis
Things start turning into a nightmare when a group of dancers start acting out of control after drinking a spiked sangria.
Cast - Sofia Boutella, Romain Guillermic, Souheila Yacoub, Claude Gajan Maull, Thea Carla Schott
Directed By - Gaspar Noé
Genre - Musical, Horror, Mystery, Drama
Gaspar Noé's Climax opens up with the film's climax scene and then jumps back to its origin. We see a group of dancers being interviewed and then put together in an abandoned school where we are greeted with breathtaking dance numbers. They take a break in between to discuss there peer's dirt and relationships. We come to know what they think of others and then bam, another dance sequence follows. Everything looks straight out of a dreamy musical world.
But beauty doesn't last for long as things take an ugly turn when the dancers start acting irrationally and madly after going under the influence of a sangria tampered with an LSD. Who spiked the drinks? But the train leaves the station even before you start to put on your thinking caps to identify the suspect. What follows is less of whodunit and more of a burning hell made to repulse and attract you at the same time.
It is hard to look away from the screen even during some of the most intense and disturbing sequences. Noé intelligently mixes one takes with stunning dance numbers to hypnotise the audience. He is known for creating elaborate scenes that don't seem to end. Here, those scenes work like a charm. With such a seamless transition, it becomes almost impossible to look away. You hold your breath during some moments which you realise when it abruptly cuts to the next scene. Directors like Gaspar Noé do open up new possibilities and ways to shoot a scene.
The camera remains fixed, looks from above, turns 360 and even goes upside down. Noé uses everything at his disposal to make things uncomfortable and dizzy while Benoît Debie's colourful cinematography keeps things appealing. The soundtrack camouflages with the situation; it changes from peppy to spooky all the while remaining catchy. On a technical level, this is a mind-blowing movie.
After its 96 minutes of shock and abyss, there is barely any life left in the characters or the audience to feel anything. The effect is so great that you barely gasp when the culprit is revealed. Of course, I mean all this in a positive way. This is a horror film, and you should be scared and disturbed after watching one, which is something it manages to achieve. Climax would be best if experienced in the theatres. It's interesting to note that the movie takes place at a school - a place made for learning. What does Climax teach then? Probably, not to indulge in drugs as it leads to destruction. It can also make up for a cool educational video.
