Gully Boy Movie Review - The Time Has Come
Zoya Akhtar's new film is loosely based on the life of two rappers, Divine and Naezy. It brings forth the rap originated from the undergrounds of Mumbai.
Cast - Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt, Kalki Koechlin, Siddhant Chaturvedi, Vijay Raaz, Amruta Subhash
Directed By - Zoya Akhtar
Genre - Musical, Drama, Romance
Gully Boy in a way serves up as a wake-up call to all the audience in the theatre. One of the scenes, in the beginning, shows Murad (Ranveer Singh) sleeping on his bed. This is most of the audience who are oblivious to the world of rap and also the life of the two rappers who are portrayed in the film. It only then makes sense that it ends with an alarm in the form of the song "Apna Time Aayega" which opens a new world for all the hidden gems on the streets.
The camera navigates in and out of Murad's small house and into his big "gully" which after a runtime of 155 minutes feels familiar. Trust Zoya, and she will even make the interiors of a bus look cinematic. Murad means wish or desire and rap is what he desires. He observes his surroundings and conjures lyrics. He raps about streets, poverty, corruption and many more common things which make his words authentic and relevant. Apart from the rap, his other interest includes Safeena (Alia Bhatt), who could easily fit in a Fatal Attraction kind of movie. She sometimes blurs the line between love and obsession. "Cute but Psycho" as they say. She could have turned this musical into a psychological thriller, but we know how things eventually turn out. She provides a pillar to his breaking life.
Then there is Murad's angry father, played by an outstanding Vijay Raaz, a character often played by Ronit Roy who always comes in between his son's dream. He shouts, he beats and loathes his child's existence. It's only Murad's mother (an effective Amruta Subhash) and his friends who support him in his journey. A huge shoutout to Siddhant Chaturvedi who plays MC Sher, a role model for Murad who encourages him to fly with his wings of words. Kalki Koechlin as Sky had a shorter screen time but was fine.
Zoya has proved herself to be one of the most successful and talented directors of our time. From her terrific debut with Luck by Chance to her very entertaining Dil Dhadakne Do and now Gully Boy, she has established herself to be as a director of high significance. She is probably one of the few people's in the industry who can match content with entertainment without going off balance.
If I have to put the finger on it, then the only flaw I have is regarding the interval system in the theatres. There is a scene where the sounds of drums and flutes are dissolved into Murad's world when he puts on his earphones. He is brought back to reality as his father takes them out. The interval drains out most of the experience with its annoying ads that seem to go on for decades. That is why I think it's runtime is perfect as ample amount of time is given to suck you inside the dusty streets and the marvellous lyrical world of hip hop. Perhaps one day, "Apna time aayega jab bina interval ke mai movie dekh ke aayega". Let me stop now before I cringe you to death.
