Captain Marvel Movie Review - Feminism on Fire

The new entry in the MCU follows the origin of a new superhero who is caught in a war between the two galaxies.

Cast - Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, Jude Law, Lashana Lynch

Directed By - Anna Boden, Ryan Fleck

Genre - Superhero, Fantasy, Sci-Fi

She falls, she rises, she kicks ass, and she is funny. Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) is considered to be one of the most powerful superheroes and what better time to release this power than on women's day. She blasts enemies with the death lasers from her hands and also uses them to heat the kettle. She could very well use those hands for both fighting and cooking. This is Marvel's way of showing women empowerment - they can love and destroy you in seconds. But we are not here to talk about women's so let's start reviewing the movie.

Captain Marvel (also called as Vers and Carol Danvers) crashes on to the Earth and now has to fight the bad guys who are after her for some reasons. The villains are shapeshifters known as Skrulls. Their power allows them to access restricted areas. Imagine having such an ability and the things we could do with them. But humans are known to "shapeshift" internally. This power would just be icing on the cake for us. There is Yon-Rogg (Jude Law) who trains Vers to control her powers which is again Marvel's way of rendering the dominance of a male over the opposite sex. On Earth, Marvel is joined by Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) a member of S.H.I.E.L.D whose de-ageing is fantastically rendered with CGI. Together they make the film a buddy cop adventure.  But it is the cat who steals the show and spotlight from the other characters.

Like many Marvel movies, this one also has its fair share of chest thumping fan moments. The opening Marvel logo scene and the first out of the two end credit scenes prove that the fan service provided by them is one of the best. Fans are sure to have orgasms during the mentioned credit scene. At least, it happened at my screening.

This blockbuster gets an indie heart with directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. They are responsible for making one of the most underrated and my favourite film Half Nelson. It's always good to see big studios giving a chance to the other independent filmmakers which showcases there skills on a global scale. They have also written the screenplay along with Geneva Robertson-Dworet.

But make no mistake, Captain Marvel, in the end, is just your typical superhero origin film with a social twist. This, however, is not a problem. The problem lies in it's big and small slowly paced buildups that do not pay off. A scene filmed with a handheld camera showing two characters talking outside someone's house indicates a great emotional charge but steams off quietly without catching fire. Sometimes it even fails to build up and moments that follow don't feel earned or inducing.

There had been some controversies and fights regarding this film. Some loved and supported it while others hated it to the extent that they even put up fake negative reviews online. Captain Marvel may not be as powerful, groundbreaking or even strong as its protagonist but proves to be a mildly entertaining ride to fill the gaps and your time.
