In 1897, history was written when 10000 tribesmen from Afridi and Orakzai mountain faced against 21 Bravehearts of the Sikh Regiment of the British Army. In late 2017, history was planned to be rewritten when Bollywood producers decided to recreate this battle on screen. They roped in Akshay Kumar, and the rest is history. The colour of Kesari (Saffron in English) filled the theatres during the festival of colours which is Holi.

In an interview, Akshay had said how almost everyone in India knows about Snyder's 300 but not about the "Battle of Saragarhi". His main intention of making Kesari was to educate and make people aware of this brave battle. In that aspect, I think he has succeeded with flying colours and would make many reflect in awe about this incident. But intentions are not the only sole factor on which the foundation of a movie stands on or depends.

Kumar plays Havildar Singh, a tough but kind-hearted man who is ready to jump in the fire for the greater good. In an early sequence, he disobeys orders to rescue a woman. Later on in the film, as a punishment, he is sent to an army post. His character then becomes reminiscent of Ranjit from Airlift, Laxmikant from Padman or Tapan Das from Gold where he takes on the challenge to lead a group of people against the bigger problem. It looks like Akshay can now do these kinds of roles while sleepwalking. He helps enemies in construction and makes sure they get water during the fight. Occasionally, we get to see Parineeti playing Havildar's wife making sweet conversations with him.

The first half tries to latch us with the characters emotionally. It acts as a breather for the deadly second half where bodies are brutally laid down with Jasleen Kaur's voice echoing in the air. It gets nasty and brutal, but the movie manages to take whistles from the audience while Akshay gives away heroic monologues and slays the enemies in slow motion. Everything could have been wrapped up in one and a half hours, but the unnecessary drag of the first half stretches the runtime without any significant weight. Forceful humour and scenes are stuffed for no purpose.

But when the fight begins, the movie becomes a bit watchable, and some of the scenes did leave an impact although the sad cue music was heavily overused. I only wish that the impact was there for a little longer.
