Saaho Movie Review - Guns and Roses

Cast - Prabhas, Shraddha Kapoor, Neil Nitin Mukesh, Murali Sharma

Directed By - Sujeeth

Genre - Action, Thriller

Your response towards Saaho would depend upon your taste towards the movies. What makes you go to a theatre? Are you a die-hard fan of Prabhas? Does action alone make up for your shelled out bucks? Your answers will tell you if spending 3 hours of your life on Saaho would be worth it or not. Now, I don't want to rip this movie apart, but the options given to me are not so broad. Saaho is just another "masala" movie that caters to a particular section of the audience. To be clear, I like these so-called "masala" films, and if done right, they could prove to be some easy-breezy fun times at the movies. But our filmmakers slap this word on every brainless idea that they come up with and then go hiding behind it. By hiring a well-known face, they further strengthen their foundation and so when someone dismisses there films, they face the wrath of the fans. Then some familiar lines like "leave your brains at home" or "you don't understand this genre" make the headlines. And who the hell came up with this "leaving your brain at home" phrase? Why the fuck should I? It's a part of my body. I can't just switch it off and keep it on a sofa or inside a fridge.

All this trash talk might indicate that I really, really, really, really hated Saaho. Actually, that's not entirely true. To be fair, those sudden twists that hit you every 5 or 15 minutes, including some of the plot points require us to use our brains. I don't think it would help but give it a try. Even the twists are somewhere between those of Race and Race 3. Some are okay while some are unnecessary. No, make that stupid. The film tries desperately to pull the rug from under your feet, but you don't budge or register the shock that they aim for. Some of them are easily predictable. I would not have been surprised if Prabhas' character's name was revealed to be Amarendra Baahubali and the director of this film to be Abbas-Mustan.

But what about the action? Well, not all of them are perfect as they lack fluidity in there editing. The one which happens during the final minutes is somewhat engaging where you get to see some cool gadgets and flying Jet Mens and fire. It comes far too late but is the only redeeming thing on the top of my head now.

In a movie like this, the main character exists solely to show how smart he is from others while the supporting cast seems to belong from Cartoon Network. Our hero plays with them like dolls. He even plays with bullets. It is almost like he commands them when to hit and when to miss. Shots are fired from every direction, but they never hit the target unless it comes from the hero. Some may call it invincibility, I prefer the word absurdity.

I have barely talked about the plot. It doesn't really matter. There are fights, some gangsters and a black box which is the key to a treasure. Insert occasional dance routines that transport the characters from a street to the mountains in seconds. If only traveling were this easy. I would love to visit those places. Sadly, I am not a mainstream actor in a high-budget movie.

The budget is said to be 350 crores. The only time it felt justified was during the climax. I could have attended the ongoing Venice Film Festival if I had these digits in my account. Unfortunately, all I could afford was to get psycho with this saiyaan.
