Insidious: The Last Key - Movie Review
Cast - Lin Shaye, Angus Sampson, Leigh Whannell, Josh Stewart, Caitlin Gerard
Directed by - Adam Robitel
Insidious: The Last Key is the fourth installment in the Insidious franchise and is a prequel to the first Insidious and a sequel to the Insidious: Chapter 3. Directed by Adam Robitel, the story is about Elise's childhood fear which she faces again when a man calls him to help her who happens to be staying in the same house where Elise used to stay during her childhood.
There are pretty cool scares here and plenty of jump scares. While the jump scares are real instead of false jump scares, they do little to freak you out. It is certainly not the strongest installment in the franchise but is also not bad either. There is a twist here which I did not see it coming. You don't need to watch the previous films to fully understand it but if you do watch them, you will enjoy this one a little bit more than the other people who have not watched the previous installments. Although the critics seem to hate it very much as seen on the Rotten Tomatoes, I still enjoyed watching The Last Key. I am a big Insidious fan and the first two films are my favourite in the entire series. The idea of keeping the ghosts finger as a key was pretty cool. The scenes involving flashlights were executed well. The film seemed to drag a bit during the first act but during the second act, it picked up pace. The story was okay and one has to give credit to the 74 year old Lin Shaye as she is holding the entire franchise on her head. The direction of Adam Robitel is good but I really miss James Wan as he made wonders happen when he directed the first two Insidious movies. After he left the director's chair, the next two films that came out where okay but not that great. I also wish that if they would make a fifth installment then they should probably continue from where the second chapter closed off and also bring back James Wan as the director.
My issue with the film was the jokes that were thrown here. They were just too many of them for a horror movie which really removed away all the tension that is required in a horror film. A person sitting behind my seat in the theatre even shouted that "Yeh horror film hai ya comedy?".
Coming to the performances, there really is nothing I would like to say. There is Lin Shaye as Elise who just gives her best performance again. There are other characters too but the film is totally focused on Elise so they don't shine through.
In the end, Insidious: The Last Key is just a decent horror film and the franchise has not become worst yet. It is an okay horror film which the Insidious fans will surely enjoy more than the normal audience.
My Rating - 3/5
