Udaan - Movie Review

Cast - Rajat Barmecha, Ronit Roy, Aayan Boradia, Ram Kapoor, Manjot Singh

Directed by - Vikramaditya Motwane

Udaan is a 2010 gem written by Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane and is also directed by Motwane too. The film tells the story of Rohan (Rajat Barmecha) who is expelled from his boarding school as he is caught watching an adult film with his friends that goes by the name "Kanti Shah ke Angoor". He has a passion for writing poems but his passion is suppressed by his terrifying father Ronit Roy who he refers to as "sir".

Udaan as the name goes basically tells that part of the story which is very important in life if you want to achieve your dream, i.e; freedom. You first need to be free from all the obstacles and go out of the cage to achieve your passion. In the film, Rohan's house is the cage and his father is the cage master. Rohan is like an animal who is trapped inside the cage and has to follow all the instructions given to him like an pet. He can't do anything of his choice, he cannot think, he cannot dream as these are all forbidden for him. He has a younger brother with him who too is trapped inside this cage with him and both of them have just one dream, to be free from there father's clutches. He sneaks at night and steals his father's car to roam freely in the streets to have a taste of freedom. The film handles the story of the teenage life depicting the dreams, fantasies and pleasures that one needs and haves during this time very beautifully and maturely. The film never deviates from it's path and is quite consistent throughout. No unnecessary sub plots are included just for the sake of increasing the run time. That being said, my only issue with the film was that although it didn't deviate from it's concept but towards the end, the film really seemed to have dragged and I thought that almost 5 or 10 minutes could have been snipped off.

The performances here are quite exceptional and full of surprises. Ronit Roy is just horribly satisfying. He really tensed up the screen and provided scares and hatred towards him with his performance which I think was required as he was meant to be hated, he really deserves all the praises for his performance. Rajat Barmecha as Rohan is sweet and innocent and displayed his angry man emotions equally well when required. The little kid who played Rohan's younger brother too was delightful. Ram Kapoor surprised me with his performance. I didn't expect such a good performance from him.

Overall, this film is worth your time and money and will surely wake up your inner jazbaa to follow your dream. This is just one of the best motivational film showcasing the reality faced by many individuals who dare to dream.
