Guzaarish - Movie Review

Cast - Hrithik Roshan, Aishwarya Rai, Aditya Roy Kapoor

Directed By - Sanjay Leela Bhansali

Guzaarish is a magnum opus by Sanjay Leela Bhansali that came out in 2010. It tells a touching story about Ethan (Hrithik Roshan) who is paralyzed and is now an RJ. Once a great magician and now an RJ, Ethan inspires millions of people to never give up hope and never quit in life. But what happens when he himself decides to quit? The film tells his struggles and how his decision affects people around him.

In my opinion, this is Bhansali's best and underrated work yet. The film truly takes out all the emotions outside from you and makes you feel for Ethan. The sets are grand and visuals delightful. Bhansali's blacks and blues across the frame provide a colorful cinematic experience to the audience. I was truly amazed with waters coming down my cheeks as I admired it's beautiful story and exceptional visuals. I mean seriously the visuals here are one of the best with the grand sets soaring high which draws you towards it. I was either teary eyed by the story or because of watching the rich cinematography with awe. This movie came long before Bajirao Mastani which is widely accepted by audience and critics and also offers grand visuals to feast your eyes on but still I think Guzaarish is way more better and superior than any Bhansali film I had watched till now ( I have not watched all of them). It really has an emotional and inspiring story which I feel should have got more attention. Bhansali directs the film masterfully showing off  his grand visuals confidently with a steady pace.

My only issue with the film is it's songs. I mean they are really good with "Tera Zikr" as one of my favourite track from the movie but it is the way they are placed in the movie. You get connected with the film but then a song pops up and you really loose the connection then. If only the songs had not been placed in the film, then there would have been full connection throughout it's runtime as they really distract you.

Coming to the performances, Hrithik Roshan really touches the chords and gives one of his best ever performance on screen. The pain and emotions felt by a disabled person is authentically portrayed by him. Aishwarya Rai as Sofia who takes care of Ethan is just perfect for this role. She has the kind of attitude and charm that is needed for the role. Aditya Roy Kapoor as Omar who comes to Ethan to learn magic displays vulnerability and innocence just the right way. But the highlight of the film is Shernaz Patel as Devyani Dutta. She was just extraordinary and I enjoyed watching every frame in which she was present. She just fired up the screen and took the cake.

All in all, Guzaarish is a film certainly not for the masses and it surely has issues as I mentioned above but for the majority of it, it truly is an insanely good film to watch.
