Aiyaary - Movie Review
Cast - Siddharth Malhotra, Manoj Bajpayee, Rakul Preet Singh, Anupam Kher, Naseeruddin Shah, Adil Hussain
Directed By - Neeraj Pandey
Aiyaary (means: impostor) is a crime thriller film directed by Neeraj Pandey and stars Siddharth Malhotra as Major Jai Bakshi who has gone rogue and a furious Colonel Abhay Singh (Manoj Bajpayee) is determined to hunt him down. Jai has some sensitive information which can bring down the loopholes present in the Indian Army. What follows are some flashbacks within flashbacks and an attempt to invoke the inner patriotism towards the country.
Neeraj Pandey is known for making films with good content and Aiyaary has it's heart in the right place. But sadly, Aiyaary does not invoke us like Pandey's previous films and this one drags for too long to make an impact. Let's talk about the positives first, Manoj Bajpayee is spectacular here. Most of the impactful and light-hearted scenes involve Bajpayee. It's Bajpayee who tries to lift the film on his shoulders. I like Siddharth Malhotra, he is a fine actor and his choice of films are different and good. He tries to avoid playing recurring roles which can be seen in his previous films like Baar Baar Dekho or A Gentleman and so on. Here also he plays his character well and tries hard to impress the audience with his performance but is heavily overshadowed by Bajpayee's performance but still, I commend Malhotra for choosing different kinds of roles. Another good thing about this movie is the story it tries to tell, in an industry which is busy in making stupid romantic films, Pandey tries to make an impact with patriotism through his films and he should be given credit for that.
Now talking about the negatives, the duration of the film is the biggest problem here. With a runtime of almost 2 hours and 40 minutes, it is not easy to sit through the entire film as it fails to keep you engaged throughout. Some plot points are revealed later in the film which by the time when revealed don't give the necessary impact as you stop caring for it or almost forget about it. Also, the love angle introduced between Jai and Sonia (Rakul Preet Singh) feels forced and unnecessary. Thankfully, Rakul is not used as an eye candy for the audience here and tries to do something for the plot no matter how small. A flashback involving Kashmir starts with Jai saying something like "Ek qissa yaad aaya", it's one of the laziest excuses for a flashback in a film. The other characters including the ones in Bajpayee's team are heavily wasted and don't do much on screen. The significance of Naseer's character is revealed during the last moments of the film and as I said earlier, you lose interest before only due to its stretched runtime.
To sum it up, Aiyaary maybe not as edgy as "A Wednesday" or as thrilling as "Special 26", but it is a somewhat good film and can be watched if you have nothing to do and almost 3 hours to spare.
My Rating - 2.5/5
