Phantom Thread - Movie Review

Phantom Thread is a 2017 period romantic drama directed by Paul Thomas Anderson and stars Daniel Day-Lewis as Reynolds Woodcock who is a fashion designer and he designs some exotic looking dresses and garments for rich peoples. His sister Cyril Woodcock (Lesley Manville) lives with him and she manages day-to-day operations of his luxurious house. One fine day, Reynolds visits this restaurant and falls for this waitress named Alma (Vicky Krieps) and asks her out. She accepts the invitation, they go on a date and she soon becomes his muse and love interest.
This is a film which tells about this two people who in spite of there differences, love and live with each other. They are polar apart, he is disciplined and wants things to flow in a order. On the other hand, she does things randomly and doesn't always follow the pattern and rules that are set in his house. Reynolds breathes life into his dresses, he meticulously designs them with all his love and expects his customers to respect his creation. He is so involved with his work that even a slight noise is unbearable for him. In one particular scene while Alma was I believe buttering her toast, the sound she made was so irritating to him that he shouted that it felt like she has ridden a horse across the room. The costumes designed by Mark Bridges are fantastically beautiful. All credit must be given to him for designing those amazing dresses that attract your attention. This is Daniel Day-Lewis's last film and he delivers a wonderful performance before taking the exit. He got so involved in his character that you start to believe that you are watching a professional fashion designer on screen and not an actor. Lesley Manville as his sister is really very very good. She always takes your attention towards her whenever she is in a scene. Vicky Krieps as his muse and lover Alma is charming and free-spirited who just wants to spend time with Reynolds and wants all his attention towards her.
The issues with the film are that it really drags during the first act which is really a problem as you fail to connect with the film. This is something which can be quite a problem and can make you bored sometimes. Also during the climax, a character in the film makes a decision which I don't think worked for me. But this is a kind of thing a great filmmaker will make, I do appreciate it but it didn't work for me but it might work for you.
Overall, Phantom Thread is a beautiful movie with stunning costumes and a great performance from its casts that can be surely enjoyed at least once.
