The Shape of Water - Movie Review

The Shape of Water is a 2017 romantic fantasy film directed by Guillermo del Toro and stars Sally Hawkins as a mute lady who works as a janitor in a secret government laboratory who communicates using sign language. Her daily routine life takes a romantic turn when a fish like creature is bought at her place of work and now she gets attracted towards it and the rest of the film explores the relationship between this "Beauty and the Beast".

It's a very weird movie as some romantic scenes between the character of Sally Hawkins and the creature feel creepy and may turn you off. Thanks to its beautiful background score, this film is quite literally a poetry in motion. Its visuals are extremely stunning and gorgeous, the set designs are beautiful and the attention to detailing is amazing. This is one of the best-looking films with vibrant colors coming out from the screen. The story of Richard Jenkins character is even significant in today's time. He is the neighbor and the only friend of Hawkins and he is a struggling advertisement illustrator. The film basically shows the void that is present in the life, the characters here are incomplete and want to fill their voids. They have desires to fulfill and a will to achieve more due to there in satisfaction. To me, the film at times felt boring but still managed to keep me hooked throughout and that is a bit of issue from my side.

The performances are top notch here. Sally Hawkins is brilliant as a mute lady who without saying anything throughout the film says so much. She is terrific and mind-blowing. Michael Shannon is the menacing and evil villain here and you can't take your eyes off him whenever he is on screen. Octavia Spencer who plays as Zelda is Hawkins co-worker and her interpreter. She too delivers a good performance. Richard Jenkins brings life to his character, he plays his part with ease and dedication. He is surely one of the best aspects of this film.

In the end, The Shape of Water is a gorgeous film with amazing visuals and awesome performances mixed with some creepy weird love making scenes which can be surely enjoyed on the big screen.
