Black Panther - Movie Review

Cast - Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong'o, Danai Gurira, Martin Freeman

Directed By - Ryan Coogler

Black Panther is directed by Ryan Coogler and it is the 18th film in the MCU. It stars Chadwick Boseman as T'Challa/Black Panther who is faced by his enemy Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan) who wants to distribute the vibranium made weapons throughout the world. Vibranium is the strongest metal in the world and Killmonger believes it should be made available to everyone outside Wakanda which is the exact opposite of what the people of Wakanda believe.

Marvel has come a long way from the typical superhero film cliches where the superhero and the supervillain fight while damaging all the buildings around them. Black Panther is a movie which not only focuses on marvelous action sequences but also on its characters. The characters are the highlight of the film and the actors do full justice to it. The background score is kick-ass and perfectly synced with the scenes, an early car chasing sequence that takes place in Busan just increases your adrenaline. Also sometimes the background music sounded like the one in the GTA San Andreas video game which is played when you successfully pass a mission. If you have played that game you will know what I am talking about. The villain is also not the typical supervillain who just wants to destroy the world and turn it into ashes, he has a noble cause but his way of approach towards it is cold and not right. This is not a superhero film that just focuses on the great power and great responsibility thing, it packs in a great social commentary too. Wakanda is a beautiful fictional place but the issues they face are real and existent in our real world also. That is the best thing about this movie as it tries to do something more with this superhero genre. Many are calling it as the best Marvel movie till date and one can not but only agree with the statement.

Coming to the negatives, I didn't find any major issues here except a fight scene in the beginning that takes place at this waterfall in Wakanda before declaring T'Challa as king. The fight scene was a bit cliched in a way where two people are fighting and when the hero is about to lose, someone he loves shouts at him like "Get up, show him who you are" and he suddenly gets very powerful and defeats the other person. It was kind of cringy to me but nothing so major as it is just a small thing when compared to the whole film.

Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther is awesome and filled with emotions. He is kind-hearted but doesn't let his goodness cloud his judgments. Michael B.Jordan as Killmonger is terrific, he breathes all the life and hatred in his character and is quite enjoyable to watch. My favorite character though was T'Challa's sister Shuri played beautifully and energetically by Letitia Wright. With an innovative mind like Tony Stark, she is the one who gives new technology to Wakanda and I liked her more than Tony. Our Watson, Martin Freeman is Agent Ross who gets more to do during the climax sequences of the film. All the other actors too were perfect in their roles and really gave some nice performances.

Black Panther is a marvel of a movie and there is no reason you should miss it in the theatres. For an 18th film in the MCU, it is safe to say that Marvel really knows how to make an enjoyable superhero film for masses. Also, there are two end credit scenes here so you might just not want to leave the theatre soon after the credits start rolling.
