Hichki - Movie Review

Hichki stars Rani Mukerji as Naina Mathur who is determined to become a school teacher in spite of her neurological condition. She suffers from Tourette Syndrome which causes occasional hiccups and because of this, she is rejected from various schools until she is hired by St. Notker's and given a class full of mastikhor students who are determined in making her leave the class or the school. How she deals with the students and would they accept her as their teacher forms the crux of the plot.

Cast - Rani Mukerji, Harsh Mayar, Neeraj Kabi

Directed By - Sidharth P Malhotra

Genre - Drama, Comedy

In 2007, we had Taare Zameen Par that was directed by Aamir Khan which explored the same dynamics of the teacher-student relationship, but Hichki is not another Taare Zameen Par film instead it tells it's own story in its way. Directed by Sidharth P Malhotra, this film shows us how a teacher is essential in a students life and how they mould the growth of a student. The amount of knowledge I had about Tourette Syndrome before watching this film is as much as the knowledge the characters in the movie possessed which is nothing. The film also tells how Tourette is not just a neurological condition of a person but how it is present in everyone in a different form. With Hichki, it's safe to say that Bollywood is taking a step towards the right direction by trying to give us more content driven film. The best thing about this film is that unlike other Bollywood films, here the leading lady doesn't need a hero or a tall and robust male character to help her through tough times. She is strong and determined enough to look after herself and even challenge others fearlessly. Apart from showing the importance of education in one's life, the film also explores the life in the rural areas and the problems faced by the people living there.

What keeps you hooked throughout its runtime of almost 2 hours is the exceptional performance of Rani Mukerji who was I think last seen as the tough cop in Mardaani. She outdoes herself and delivers one of the most memorable performance to date. It is she who keeps you engaged and invested whenever the film takes a dip which is not occasional but noticeable. Neeraj Kabi who you may have seen in movies like Dibakar Banerjee's mysteriously delicious Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! and in Meghna Gulzar's hard-hitting thriller Talvar again does a beautiful job in playing the character of a school teacher named Wadia who looks down upon the students of Naina's class and thinks highly of his students. It's sad that we do not see much of him, but he does his best to keep your eyes focused on him whenever he is on screen. The child actors too are worth appraising, and among the lot, you may recognise Harsh Mayar who won a National Award for the 2011 film I Am Kalam.

What I didn't like about the film is its runtime which is approximately 2 hours but felt a little longer. Also, the film sometimes feels too dramatic in its approach and thus makes some scenes unbelievable.

While Hichki may not provide the depth which Taare Zameen Par had, it is still a good film which deserves at least a one time watch. Don't let this hiccup stop you from going to the theatre.
