Kaun - Movie Review

Cast - Urmila Matondkar, Manoj Bajpayee, Sushant Singh

Directed By - Ram Gopal Verma

Genre - Psychological Thriller

Ram Gopal Verma had given us some of the best movies during a time long ago in the history and his film Kaun is a testament to his brilliance. Directed by Ram Gopal Verma and written by the genius Anurag Kashyap, this film is about a lady (Urmila Matondkar) who during one rainy night is found to be alone in her house and is waiting for the arrival of her parents. While going through the channels on her TV, she comes across a news channel which informs her about a psycho killer on loose who comes inside your house by making an excuse and kills you. She becomes terrified by the news and starts to think that someone is in her house until she becomes more petrified by an unwelcome doorbell by Sameer (Manoj Bajpayee) who asks her if someone by the name of Malhotra lives in the house. Sameer displays all the qualities of the psycho killer about whom Urmila's character had heard about in the news and from here begins the game of deception and thrill with some genuine twists and a shocking revelation towards the end.

This film was released in 1999 and even now 19 years later, I think it is one of the most underrated films. The audience at that time didn't understand the concept of the film but thankfully we now have some mature audience who appreciate and understand the film. What I loved about this film which generally our modern day suspense thrillers fail to do is that the big reveal at the end is not forced or illogical. If you watch the film carefully, you can see that there are legitimate seeds planted throughout the film and one needs to observe it carefully to understand it. I watched it with my full attention and I guessed the climax during the first few minutes of the film with all the reasons on my first watch. But still the film made me doubt my decision until the very end and that is the beauty of this film. Even though I guessed it correctly the film made me doubt my decision and you know a suspense thriller is good if it keeps you guessing till the very end and this film will do the same thing with you. The film in all its sense is a great psychological thriller and definitely one of the best I have watched in a very long time. The film maintains the suspenseful atmosphere around it till the very end and does a good job of keeping you hooked.

This a film with an exceptional cast and crew. Urmila Matondkar is just brilliant, she is phenomenal and deserves the most beautiful praises for her acting. I know Manoj Bajpayee is a great actor and he is my favorite in this film. The way he plays his character can make you feel uncomfortable or cringe and you are supposed to feel that way by watching him and he successfully does the job magnificently or you can say creepily. Sushant Singh had a less screen time when compared to the other two actors but still, he manages to impress with his sturdy eyes and good performance. The film is written by Anurag Kashyap and we all know he is a master in writing and direction. I hope Ram Gopal Verma starts directing more good films like Kaun again, he is really very very good.

In the end, Kaun will do what a great psychological thriller should do to you and watch this one if you haven't seen it yet to experience what a great thriller is like.
