Raid - Movie Review
Cast - Ajay Devgn, Illena D'Cruz, Saurabh Shukla
Directed By - Raj Kumar Gupta
Genre - Crime Thriller
The tagline of this film goes as "Heroes don't always come in uniform" and Raid attempts to tell the story of these superheroes who give nightmares to those supervillains who hide unaccounted money of aam janta in the hidden corners of there houses. Directed by Raj Kumar Gupta, this film is sincere and honest in its approach and narrates the incident of the I-T raid conducted by the Indian Revenue Service in the 1980's.
When I watched the trailer for this film, I was barely excited and was not expecting much from this film. I thought that it would be another typical Bollywood film dealing with corruption and I was not looking forward to it very eagerly. But after watching the film, I can say that it was a pretty good film and I had a good time watching it which was really unexpected. Amay Patnaik (Ajay Devgn) is an honest income tax officer who has been transferred 49 times thanks to his faithfulness towards his duty. He lands in Lucknow and is confronted by Rameshwar Singh (Saurabh Shukla) who is a politician with all the powers and no one tries to mess with him. The house of Rameshwar is referred to as the White House in the film. When Amay gets a tip from a mysterious caller about the black money that is being hidden inside the White House, he decides to show up on Rameshwar's door and start one of the longest raids in the history. What I liked about the film is that it wastes no time in going inside the main narrative. For the introduction of the main characters, the film only tells us what is necessary for you to know about them and doesn't give away unnecessary information. There is nothing much to say about the film as it is mostly confined inside the walls of its main antagonist's house. You feel a bit sorry for Sourabh's character as his family really lets him down and in one scene he also wishes that if only he had someone like Amay in his family.
While I did enjoy this film, that doesn't take away the issues that it has in it. The love track between Amay and Malini (Illeana D'Cruz) feels out of place and the songs although minimal play out supererogatory between the scenes. The film tries to keep you engaged but at some points, it feels dragged and moves at a snail's pace especially a scene towards the end when Amay locks himself up in a room for his protection. The big dialogue baazi between the characters although good feel long and gratuitous. I really felt Raj Kumar Gupta could have done more with this film but instead he tried to stick with the regular Bollywood narrative.
Ajay Devgn is terrific as an honest officer who does his duty faithfully. He is a law-abiding citizen who strictly follows the rules and loves his Bharat Mata. Saurabh Shukla as a politician Gunda is menacing and is a treat to watch as he performs his part comfortably. Of course, the highlight of this film is the 85-year-old Pushpa Joshi who delivers some of the funny lines in this film. She proves that it is never too late to do any job and she really did a fantastic work here.
All in all, despite some of its flaws, Raid is a good time and won't hurt your wallet if you give it a try. I did enjoy this film which was unexpected and it can be given a one time watch.
