Pari: Not a Fairytale - Movie Review

Cast - Anushka Sharma, Parambrata Chatterjee, Ritabhari Chakraborty, Rajat Kapoor

Directed By - Prosit Roy

It's not every day you get a movie like Pari, that too from Bollywood who is obsessed with cliched jump scares and horror scenes that turn out to be unintentionally funny. After seeing all the trailers and screamers that were released on the YouTube, I was very excited to watch this film and I can tell you I was not disappointed. Directed by newcomer Prosit Roy, Pari stars Anushka Sharma as Rukhsana who is found chained in a house located somewhere in the forest and Arnab (Parambrata Chatterjee) takes her under his wings and teaches her to behave like a normal human being. Arnab's reasons and the mystery behind Rukhsana is explored chillingly in the film. A shady Professor (Rajat Kapoor) is after Rukhsana and wants to find her as soon as possible. Background score by Ketan Sodha is hauntingly good.

Pari is chilling and genuinely scary, some scenes may force you to cover your eyes due to there brutal nature. It's blue and green frames are beautiful and at the same time haunting. Kolkata is beautifully explored in the film with its dark corners seem to be playing some tricks up its sleeves. A horror scene involving earphones has to be the best and the most memorable scene in the history of horror films. Also, a scene involving a group of peoples scratching the surface of the ground just sends shivers down the spine. There are many scary scenes here that are downright disturbing and spine-chilling. The film also has its fair share of jump scares but they are genuine jump scares and that is a good thing. Director Prosit Roy scatters a little humor here and there but that doesn't reduce the tension or changes the tone of the film in a negative way, it grips you till the end.

Anushka Sharma is sweet but also turns menacing when required. She slips into her character effortlessly and that makes her very enjoyable and eerie to watch. Her transformation from a sweet, harmless ghost in Phillauri to a frightful and execrable creature in Pari is praiseworthy. Hats off to her for producing and acting in a film like this. I had seen Parambrata Chatterjee perform first time on screen and he was really impressive. Rajat Kapoor is frightening and unapologetic Professor and we all know that he is a great actor. Ritabhari Chakraborty has little screen time but she manages to leave her impression behind.

Coming to the issues, the film becomes a bit slow at some points. Also, certain cool scenes in the trailers are executed differently in the film and I was attached to the scenes shown in the trailer and expected it to be like that in the film. This is not a film for the masses and there are chances that you would either love this film or completely hate it. It is not a typical horror Bollywood film, it's more like an artsy film and if you don't like films that rely upon the tension and the atmosphere more rather than in delivering stupid jump scares, you won't like this film.

Pari at least for me is a "fairytale" that I have been waiting for a long time to come from the Bollywood. If like me you are bored by watching all the Vikram Bhatt horror films and want to seek something new, go for Pari this weekend.
