Bhaagamathie - Movie Review
Cast - Anushka Shetty, Jayaram, Unni Mukundan, Asha Sarath, Murali Sharma
Directed By - G. Ashok
Gone are the days when horror movies were just about jump scares and a haunted house and some people trapped in it and all that blood being thrown on the walls. Horror as a genre is evolving nowadays in our movies and we can see traces of it in some movies like Pizza and Villa: Pizza 2 or a recent one like Pari to name a few. Bhaagamathie is an addition to this list as it truly shows us how we can tell a different story with the help of horror and also without making it very complicated. Directed by G. Ashok, it tells the story of Eswar Prasad (Jayaram), an honest politician who some corrupt people's want to frame of any negativity and so they hire Vaishnavi Natarajan (Asha Sarath) to find any hidden secrets about him that could lead to his downfall. Enter Chanchala (Anushka Shetty) who being close to Eswar Prasad is an ideal choice for questioning about this matter and due to some reasons I won't spoil, she is in prison and is taken to Bhaagamathie house, which is haunted, for questioning. What follows are some interesting twists and turns that are enough to keep you glued till the end.
This is a nice thriller movie which is coupled with horror with the final output that is served to us being quite enjoyable and thrilling. First Pari and now Bhaagamathie, I am really having a great time as I had witnessed two amazing and different horror movies. This is a really tough film to make as it has so much going on in it. A great salute to G. Ashok for handling the film very maturely as it could have easily gone in a wrong direction. The horror elements in the film reminded me of movies like Bhool Bhulaiyaa, 404: Error Not Found and Pizza but that doesn't mean that it has been copied and ripped from them. The best thing to say is that it is derived from them and then edited in the director's own way without being really a rip-off or a copy. Many films are just made by mindlessly copying from other successful films but Bhaagamathie doesn't come under this category. All the loose ends are tied and all the questions are answered, there are no cliffhangers as all the doubts are cleared layer by layer. The film manages to hide the suspense till the very end without losing steam in between its narrative. I have not seen many Tollywood horror films but after the Pizza movies, this one is surely my favorite horror film that hails from the Tollywood.
But this film too has its fair share of problems. For starters, a film that is marketed as an horror doesn't have any good or memorable horror scenes in it. Although the horror element has been wittily used in the film, it doesn't give you any chills or goosebumps. Also, these horror scenes are overly done and feel unintentionally funny at times. This is a major drawback as your film is a horror but you fail to deliver scares to the audience. It is a nice suspense thriller but not so good in terms of horror. Some scenes were unnecessarily dragged and felt long so, a crispier editing could have saved the day.
Anushka is fabulous and one expects her to give stunning performances like this even so more after Baahubali. She has created a benchmark for herself and is successfully the second Indian actress after Sridevi to have a $1 million grosser at the USA Box Office. I really loved her in Bhaagamathie and she is the major highlight of the film. Asha Sarath does her part perfectly and delivers a stunning performance which I had not expected as I don't remember seeing her anywhere and she just impressed me. Other characters too did their job well but I think they were overshadowed by Anushka as she was the primary focus and that didn't give other actors enough opportunity to shine through.
In conclusion, if you want to see a movie where there is more than meets the eye, go for Bhaagamthie as it really has some surprises for you in the store that are enough to shock you. For its ending alone, I think it deserves an extra half stars.
