October Movie Review - A Sweet Romantic Journey of Faith and Grief
October is a romantic drama film directed by Shoojit Sircar and stars Varun Dhawan and Banita Sandhu in the lead role. It is a film about grief, love and faith which takes us on a ride to this unusual journey about two people who fall in love under extraordinary circumstances.
Cast - Varun Dhawan, Banita Sandhu, Gitanjali Rao
Directed By - Shoojit Sircar
Genre - Romantic Drama
During a time when the trailers reveal almost 50% of the content of a film, I loved and respected October a lot, and I was quite impressed by the filmmaker's decision on releasing the trailer of the film by keeping the details to the bare minimum. You had no idea what was going to happen here, and this improved the experience of watching this film. So I would like to respect the filmmaker's decision and will make this review vague as I don't want you to know anything about the film and would highly recommend to watch this film without reading any story online or any review containing spoiler. So, October is about a guy named Dan (Varun Dhawan) who is a hotel management trainee and a girl named Shiuli (Banita Sandhu) who is Dan's co-worker in this hotel. On the night of a New Year's Eve, something unexpected and tragic happens, and this leads to the formation of a bond between our two main characters. This is a film which does not have any grand and slo-mo entry of the hero or the heroine in their fancy costumes. They are introduced casually in the film while they are doing their jobs and we are given an insight to there day to day events that take place in there workplace. Now what I liked about this movie is the soul-soothing and riveting background score by Shantanu Moitra. There are no songs present in this film; it's the background music that plays during certain scenes. He gives one of the most fantastic music in this film that lingers with you even after the credits had stopped rolling. The cinematography by Avik Mukhopadhayay is gorgeous and beautiful to look at as he captures the foggy city of Delhi with depth and detail. The direction of Shoojit Sircar is also fabulous, and he has proven himself to be a more than a capable director with gems like Piku, Vicky Donor and Madras Cafe, and in October too, he was genius.
The performances are also a highlight here as we see Varun Dhawan acting in this film which he had previously done in Badlapur. He proves that not only he can entertain you with his funny antics and sometimes overacting, but he can also deliver strong performances and can get under any skin according to the script. Banita Sandhu was also good in this film, and she has a potential to be an excellent actor, and I am sure she will give some outstanding performances in the future. But the highlight of this film is none other than Gitanjali Rao who sways you with her exceptional and mind-blowing performance. I loved her more than anyone else in this film, she is phenomenal.
When you make a movie with this kind of story, there are chances that you may get a bit melodramatic and over the top and end up making the film a bit cringy or cheesy. But October does a fantastic job of not getting too melodramatic, even during some very emotional scenes and I liked this aspect of the film. Also, there are no big mouthy dialogues here; there are simple lines and words that a normal person uses in his daily life. The use of humour in this film is again smart as it never makes the film feel boring.
My only and significant issue with this film is that it became what I wanted it to be during the last 30 minutes of its runtime. Before that, it just felt average, repetitive and monotonous. Nothing major happened in the film, and it was like it was put on repeat, but only the settings were changed. The last 30 minutes of this film were riveting and had more soul than the rest of the film. Given the fact that it is a 2-hour long film and only the last few minutes provided the necessary satisfaction, it is a big issue for this film. If only it had been gripping from the start, it could have been the perfect romantic film.
In the end, I think October is a good film which had a lot of potential to be a fantastic film but given the amount of soulless and cheesy romantic movies we get, this is a much better film, and I will surely recommend you to check out this sweet romantic journey of faith and grief.
