Game Night Movie Review - Not A Game
When a group of friends are invited to a game night, little do they know that the murder mystery game turns out to be a real murder mystery and it's up to them to figure out a way to rescue one of there friend from something criminal.
Cast - Jason Bateman, Rachel McAdams, Billy Magnussen, Sharon Horgan, Lamorne Morris, Kylie Bunbury
Directed By - John Francis Daley, Jonathan Goldstein
Genre - Black Comedy, Crime, Mystery, Action, Thriller, Suspense
Max (Jason Bateman) and Annie (Rachel McAdams) are made for each other couples who are very competitive when it comes to games. They like to win every game they play and are pretty serious about not losing to the others. When Max's brother Brooks (Kyle Chandler) invites Max and his friends over to his house for a game night, the well-planned murder mystery game turns into a real crime, and they soon find out that Brooks might be in danger and it's up to them to save Brooks before something terrible happens.
Game Night is a fantastic film with doses of fun and mystery attached to it which will entertain you throughout the whole surface. Its twists and turns are unpredictable, and you never know what might happen next. The direction of the film is superb and makes it look like a real board game whenever we get the shots of the buildings from high above the ground. Its razor-sharp pacing is the icing on the cake as it leaves no room for dull spaces. This is a very entertaining film and a perfect example of a black comedy filled with fun and action which never goes too far in either of the direction and maintains the balance between the two throughout its runtime of 100 minutes. A chase sequence filmed like a one-shot that takes place inside a house is one of the best scenes in the film. The film does a perfect job of holding your attention and never lets you pull your eyes off the screen. It is interesting to watch the characters play this game-turned-into-tragedy, and we too enjoy it as if we are also present with the characters. This movie thoroughly involves you with its settings and the scenes and wraps up around you pretty quickly leaving no chance for you to escape, but in the end, you don't want to escape, you want to experience it all with the characters.
The presence of memorable characters adds up to the overall fun of the film. Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams together form a terrific couple onscreen, and they electrify every frame with there presence. These two are the highlights of this film and genuinely look like a real-life couple. Billy Magnussen has some funny lines here that will crack you up thanks to his fantastic comic timing. Another character that I liked the most is that of the Jesse Plemons who plays as a police officer named Gary and is the neighbour of Max and Annie. He makes the scene awkward with his presence, and that is supposed to happen with him as his character is built like that and he does his job perfectly in the film. He did creep me out sometimes, and that is a good thing which means he does his job excellently.
The other characters in the film didn't have enough exposure as the primary focus was on Jason and Rachel's character. As a result, the others were left in the background, and that is a pity as all the remaining characters were exciting but they were not fully utilised, and this is my only issue with the film.
Game Night is sharp, funny and filled with interesting twists and is definitely worth your watch. Don't try to skip on this one as it is pure entertainment which will surprise you with all the humour and action present in it.
