Goodluck Review - Knock Knock Good Luck is Here
A salesperson has a weird job of selling good luck to people. But soon this good luck turns into bad luck for all the people as something unfortunate starts to happen to them because of this good luck. What is this good luck all about? Does it bring any good luck or is just a hoax?
Cast - Kunal Roy Kapur, Tina Desai, Darshan Jariwala
Directed By - Sujoy Ghosh
Genre - Thriller
As unbelievable as it may sound but Peter (Kunal Roy Kapur) has a job of selling good luck to people and of course everybody initially thinks it as a stupid hoax but gradually due to the familiar greedy nature of the human being, people start taking up the good luck which is generally a contract on paper which the user has to sign and then good things will start happening in your life. No terms and conditions are initially present for the first three months of the free trial. When a person who is having a lousy life hears about getting good luck and that too for free, he will though reluctant at the beginning will surely catch the offer, and this is what happens with the characters in the film. The primary focus is on the three characters among whom there is a child who wants to crack the JEE exam. The second one is a couple who don't have the benefit of having their own child in there life and the third one has an extramarital affair with some other women who he gets pregnant and also has some problems regarding his work for which he may get fired from his office. They all initially take Peter's good luck offer as something stupid but soon due to there problems, they sign up the deal, and things start to change for good in there life until some unpleasant events start happening with them.
The film focuses and brings out the selfish nature of the human beings and exposes there reaction towards wanting a better life for themselves no matter what cost they have to pay. Peter never forces them to sign the contract for good luck; it is there desperation and neediness that forces them to take action. Goodluck shows the desperate side of the human psychology and sets up the plot in a very imaginative and different way which is praiseworthy. We all would like to have good things in our life by just signing a contract if possible, and the attachment of the word free would only raise our greediness. You would have generally noticed that we as humans are kind of obsessed with the word free and find ourselves craving for something which is titled as free and if that turns out to be a problem solver, we rarely give it a second thought, and that is what the characters in the film do which is acceptable.
The performance of Kunal Roy Kapur is the one which is the film's major highlight as he does his job excellently. The kindness and innocence he brings out in his character is superb. Tina Desai was charming and lovable in her part and was enjoyable to watch. Darshan Jariwala as the police officer has not much to do here as he is most of the time interrogating Jenny (Tina Desai) throughout the film. The other cast were also not exposed much but did an okay job in there parts if not good. The direction of Sujoy Ghosh as always is crispy and delicate.
Although the film is a good watch, there are issues with the movie like an event which I won't spoil is unexplained in the film. Also, the ending was a bit off for me as I didn't agree with the choice of a character which he/she accepts. It is possible that you may agree with the character's decision but for me, it was not acceptable and felt more dramatic. It felt like the director forcefully throws it to provide a good twist in the film.
Goodluck is the second TV film under Sujoy Ghosh with the first one being Mirchi Malini that was directed by Pratim D. Gupta. Both of the films gave almost the same vibe to me as they are enjoyable to watch and can be at least given a one time watch.
