Ghost Stories Movie Review - Horror With A Twist
Professor Philip Goodman (Andy Nyman) devotes his life to expose the fraudulent psychics who claim to have contact with the supernatural. But when he receives three paranormal case files, his own belief on the supernatural takes a turn.

Professor Philip Goodman is a well-known Professor who is known for exposing the truth behind the fraudulent psychics who claim to have contact with the spirits on his TV show. He doesn't believe in paranormal and thinks everything has an explanation behind it. After all, the film's tagline also says that "The Brain Sees What It Wants To See". One day, he gets a call from a famous paranormal investigator who has been missing for decades, and he hands him three case files which contains ghost incidents and asks Phillip to investigate them, and hence we get an anthology.
I had heard a lot of positive things about this movie and wanted to see it for a very long time. So finally after seeing the movie, I can confidently say that it is one of the clever horror films I have seen after a very long time. This film understands what a real horror movie should be; it's not about gore, blood, violence or an apparition behind a closed door or a corner. A real horror film is about making the audience unsettle with the story and creep you out by getting under your skin. Ghost Stories will creep you out for sure as the three stories in it are very creepy and spooky and are smartly connected with each other. It makes sure that the tension doesn't wear off by giving you a lazy jump scare and you feel a sense of uneasiness when watching the movie. At its core, the film is about our regrets and things that we may have done in the past and how a person may either face it or leave it alone like it never happened. It explores that dark part of the human mind with such wittiness that I was very very impressed by this movie. There are frightening visuals in this movie and, I found one which creeped me out because of how brilliantly it was executed. All the three stories are satisfying and impressive and are perfectly crafted. Each story builds upon the other and takes us to a mind-blowing finale.
Andy Nyman is one of the directors of this movie and has also acted in it. He does a fantastic job in the film with respect to both the acting and the directing. The credit must also go to Jeremy Dyson for the direction as it is directed by two peoples. Jeremy had studied Philosophy at the University of Leeds, and that reflects in this movie. Other actors namely Paul Whitehouse, Alex Lawther and Martin Freeman were all remarkable in their parts. Alex Lawther though was phenomenal, and you may recognise him as James from the Netflix series The End Of The F***ing World, and he was also in the Imitation Game as young Alan Turing. I loved a scene which takes place in the car where he changes his expressions from happy to sad to confusing and many more rapidly. He stole the show with his performance.
Coming to the issues with the film, many people will have a problem with the movies ending as they may feel betrayed. The way it starts, and on a note with which it ends, there occurs a drastic change in the tone of the film, and some people may find it problematic. Of course, I do think it's not a betrayal as it does make sense, but the opinion will differ from person to person because everyone has a different perspective regarding the horror films.
Ghost Stories is smart, surprising and unusual. It's a movie that I will watch again for its sheer brilliance. I do recommend this movie to you especially if you love horror films. Do give it a watch.
