Regression Movie Review - The Satanic Cult

A detective investigates the rape of a traumatised teen and also uncovers the truth behind the satanic cult activities going on in the city.

Cast - Ethan Hawke, Emma Watson, David Thewlis, David Dencik, Aaron Ashmore

Directed By - Alejandro Amenabar

Genre - Psychological Thriller, Mystery

The year is 1990, and we are in the town of Minnesota along with Detective Bruce Kenner (Ethan Hawke) who investigates the rape of a 17-year-old girl Angela (Emma Watson). Upon investigation, the suspicion moves to a satanic cult because of Angela's testimony in which she says that she was abused by people in masks and someone took pictures of it.

The movie is based on actual events as we are told so at the beginning of the film. Regression is a film that I enjoyed watching, and I was shocked by the negativity and the low score it got at the Rotten Tomatoes. The movie is directed by Alejandro Amenabar who also made the 2001 film The Others which is one of my all-time favourites, and he did a fantastic job at directing this film too. It is a well directed and well-acted film, and I do have a hard time believing the ratings online. The movie talks about cults and satanic rituals, and I genuinely get frightened by the cults who practice these demonic rituals as nothing is more scarier than the idea of a person or a group of people living among you ready to perform some weird rituals on you. They look like a normal person but hide sinister motives inside them and whats worse is that you may be friends with them and you would have no knowledge about it. Something similar to this was shown in the brilliantly crafted horror film Rosemary's Baby which gave me creeps and chills. Regression, of course, is not as great as Rosemary's Baby, but it is also not a bad film and is quite good. Bruce is the main protagonist in the movie who is investigating the case, and he gets so involved with it that he starts getting nightmares and becomes paranoid and the film starts blurring the line between reality and fiction The film talks about paranoia and the delusions it gives to a person. Actually, paranoia is the main theme of the movie, and it tells about how a story can make a person paranoid if he gets so involved with it. The film has a mystery element to it which I enjoyed watching. It slowly unravels and keeps you focused until the revelation occurs.

Talking about the revelation, I was disappointed with the way the movie ends. It has some narrative problems, and this film as a whole will disappoint many. I can see why many people will hate it especially the ending which I thought was merely okay I guess. I found it less impactful. The film is also a bit trippy, and I found myself losing interest from it, but it immediately holds your attention back and doesn't let you wander for long.

Ethan Hawke is a terrific actor, and I think he is underrated. He gave his best performance in the movie and was quite riveting to watch on screen. Emma Watson was also fine in the movie, and I like seeing her outside the character of Hermione Granger from the Harry Potter series. She did her job in the film and gave an excellent performance. I also liked David Thewlis as Professor Kenneth Raines who helps Bruce with his investigation in the movie.

Overall, Regression is a very good film, and I enjoyed the ride this movie had me on for the majority of it. Don't bother yourself with the low ratings the film has on the Rotten Tomatoes as it is not a bad film and is actually quite good.

Rating - 3/5
