Gothika Movie Review - The Night Of The Ghost
A psychiatrist wakes up in an asylum after an accident and is accused of a murder she doesn't remember committing. Meanwhile, a spirit contacts her cryptically, and she needs to connect the dots to solve the mystery behind the incident which took place on the night of her accident.
Cast - Halle Berry, Penelope Cruz, Robert Downey Jr., Charles S. Dutton, John Carroll Lynch
Directed By - Mathieu Kassovitz
Genre - Psychological Horror, Thriller
Dr Miranda Grey (Halle Berry) is a psychologist who is good at her job, and she works at the Woodward Penitentiary For Women. On a rainy night while driving back to her home, she has an encounter with a ghost, and when she next wakes up, she finds herself in the same asylum where she works but as a patient. Miranda has no memory of what transpired after the car accident and is now treated by her co-worker Dr Pete Graham (Robert Downey Jr.). She is accused of murdering her husband, and due to her faded memory, she doesn't recall doing anything of that kind and she is also being communicated by a ghost who tries to tell her something which she has to decode and which will hopefully help her in regaining her memory back and also tell her what actually happened to her husband.
I love horror movies, and I like to watch them a lot. There is something exciting and fun about witnessing a horrific entity creeping up from behind you or a ghost watching you from the window and scaring the shit out of you on screen. My love for the genre lead me to watch this movie which was released way back in 2003 having an interesting premise. Asylum is a perfect setting for a horror movie, and I think you can do so much with this setting that can genuinely scare the daylight out of the audience. I guess Gothika was successful in setting up a creepy and haunting atmosphere and the movie does have some scenes which give you the required chills. Out of the two scenes in the film involving Miranda escaping from the mental hospital, the second one was thrilling and a nail-biting experience. The movie does an excellent job in packing up the suspense and revealing it only at the crucial moment of the finale, but if you watch it more keenly, I think you will get the suspense just minutes before the movie throws it in your face by telling it to you. It is a well-directed movie, and the credit must be given to Mathieu Kassovitz for directing it with passion. There is a scene involving a person burning on fire, and you can easily notice that it is a CGI but this movie did come at a time when the technology was not so advanced as it is now, so that was not so much of an issue.
Talking about issues, for a movie consisting of a talented cast and an eerie atmosphere, Gothika doesn't fully utilise its resources. This is a movie which had a lot of potential and could have easily become a great horror film. The setting was perfect for a psychological horror movie, but it ended up being an okay film with some good sequences. Also, there are some lines in the movie that would make you cringe. By the end of it, the movie turns into something stupid and nonsensical, and you have a hard time digesting the things that happened in front of you.
This movie has some interesting characters in it. Halle Berry as a psychiatrist and a patient gives an extraordinary performance. She is an actor of extreme talents who does her part delightfully. Robert Downey Jr. is a great actor and today is famously known for playing the character of Tony Stark in the Marvel movies. Although he has nothing much to do in the film, he still manages to give an earnest performance. Penelope Cruz as an inmate and also as the former patient of Dr Miranda does an outstanding job in the film. I can keep on seeing Cruz performing on screen without getting bored. She brings a certain charm to her character, and that makes her easy on the eyes.
Gothika may contain a plot that makes no sense, but it definitely keeps you interested till the end. It is not a bad movie, but I do wish it had something more to it than what it serves the audience.
