Sanju is a biographical drama film directed by Rajkumar Hirani and tells the story about the crazy life of Sanjay Dutt covering up from his lows to his highs.

Genre - Biography, Drama, Comedy

Sanjay Dutt has been a controversial figure with reports claiming him to be a terrorist and a responsible candidate in the Mumbai bomb blasts. Sanju is the life story of Sanjay Dutt through the lens of Rajkumar Hirani and the superb performance of Ranbir Kapoor who left no stone unturned when it came to portraying him on screen.

Now, I don't know what transpired in the life of Dutt, and I can't testify towards the authenticity of this biopic so I will take a look at it as a film made by talented filmmakers. Rajkumar Hirani is known for producing some of the best movies which end up being successful both critically and commercially. Sanju is yet another feather on his hat through which he proves himself to be a first-rate director. I have always trusted Hirani, and he has never disappointed me with his films and direction. So, naturally I was excited to watch Sanju, and the presence of Ranbir Kapoor further added fuel to the fire. Finally, after watching the movie, I can say that I was satisfied with it and both Hirani and Ranbir lived up to my expectations. This movie is made like a typical Bollywood "masala" film and has so much in it to satisfy the needs of the audience. Dutt is not a likeable character, and the movie gives you many reasons for hating him. He is a womaniser who sleeps with his best friends girlfriend, a drug addict who even gets high when his mother is in a coma, an irresponsible rich boy who spends all the money on LSD. The eye candy visuals he gets after taking LSD are like Saif's visuals in Kaalakandi. In spite of his flaws, you somehow end up showing a little sympathy towards him, and you start feeling joy in his happiness and despair in his sadness. The movie shows us the consequences that our families or loved ones face because of our mistake that we may or may not have done. At its core, the film is about a beautiful relationship between a father and son and the intense yet graceful bond of friendship. There are some genuinely heart-wrenching scenes in the movie which are compensated by equally hilarious comic scenes. A scene involving Dutt dedicating a speech to his father is one of the most heartbreaking scenes in the film which also tells us about the value of time and how one should live in the present and do things before it gets too late.

Ranbir Kapoor is a fantastic actor and is undoubtedly one of the best to be working right now in the industry. He gets into the character of Sanjay Dutt so gracefully that one cannot stop showering praises on him. Vicky Kaushal is as much in the movie as Ranbir himself and boy did he deliver an exceptionally fantastic performance. Playing the character of Kamlesh who is Sanjay's best friend in the film, Kaushal proves himself to be a star and no less than an Oscar-worthy actor who portrays the role of a Gujarati so marvellously and effortlessly that you fall in love with him. I know Ranbir will get his due as many will praise his performance which he deserves, but Vicky Kaushal should also be equally praised for his performance in the film as he too did a fantastic job in elevating the film to an upper level. The other actors too like Paresh Rawal as Sanjay's father Sunil Dutt, Manisha Koirala as Sanjay's mother the evergreen Nargis, Anushka Sharma as Winnie, a biographer, Dia Mirza as Manyata Dutt, Sanju's wife, Jim Sarbh as Zubin are all fantastic in the movie. Even Sonam Kapoor in her short cameo appearing as Dutt's girlfriend Ruby was adorable here.

For a movie boasting of an incredibly talented cast, I was disappointed with the background score as it served as a manipulative entity during some emotional scenes in the film. This is my major issue with the movie because it felt like it was spoon feeding sad emotions to the audience. The actors are very professional and brilliant here, and the use of background score for manipulation was a waste as the actors are capable enough to trigger the emotional response in the audience with there performance. If only the director had trusted the audience, then it would have been a much better experience watching those emotional scenes. Also, the climax felt a bit over the top and dramatic to me. But I think my issues with this movie are subjective as not everybody would feel the same way about it like I do. Many will ignore the background score, and many would cheerfully clap during the climax.

Not many would agree with Sanju being a "real" biopic and would feel it to be a film that is made to clear up the image of Sanjay Dutt. If you are the one who feels this way and still somehow wants to enjoy this film, then the only other option is to see it as a fictional movie with a fictional character. After all, there are things in the movie that are hard to believe and may or may not be true (350 girlfriends, SERIOUSLY!). Again, I have only reviewed it as a movie, and I am not here to judge someone I don't know intimately. You will eventually walk out of the theatre feeling satisfied, and I think this is a movie that the majority of the audience will surely love. Before watching the film, I had read some news online about a scene showing Dutt's jail being flooded had been cut from the movie but I assure you there are no cuts and the said scene is present in the film. It is 2 hours and 41 minutes long so make sure you are well prepared so you won't have to get up in the middle for a bathroom break.
