Bhavesh Joshi Superhero Movie Review - India's Dark Knight
Bhavesh Joshi Superhero attempts to establish its franchise and is successful to an extent. Directed by Vikramaditya Motwane, this is a film about India's "Insaaf-Man".
Cast - Harshvardhan Kapoor, Nishikant Kamat, Priyanshu Painyuli, Ashish Verma, Shreiyah Sabharwal
Directed By - Vikramaditya Motwane
Genre - Action, Drama
Bhavesh Joshi Superhero is about three friends who hate corruption in a way I hate "Lauki" (Bottle Gourd). There hate leads them to wear a mask, which kind of reminded me of Irrfan's mask in Blackmail, and upload videos on YouTube in which they stop people from doing bad things in the name of "insaaf" (Justice). But when one of them in an attempt to uncover the truth behind the water scam gets killed, Siku (Harshvardhan Kapoor) decides to take the matters in his hands and transform into Mumbai's "Dark Knight".
Bhavesh Joshi Superhero is inspired from the DC Universe, and this is even confirmed by a character in a scene which takes place in a club where he says "We are DC, not Marvel". So like the DC universe, Bhavesh Joshi Superhero has a dark tone and it borrows ideas from the Batman movies. Motwane converts Batman into Bhavesh Joshi and Gotham into Mumbai. The choice for the city is excellent and provides an authenticity to the film. As an origin story, it does an excellent job of showing the mistakes done by an amateur vigilante who goes out to fight for justice. He gets beaten up during his first interrogation and also falls off from the bike during a fantastically shot chase sequence. For a superhero film, I also think the way it ended was super cool, and I don't remember seeing a superhero film ending without showing a definitive conclusion. Although, you do know what would happen as it is obvious, but still the movie ends on a note which leaves the audience imagining. There are shots showing our protagonist standing on a terrace with the buildings under construction in the background which probably refers to the continuous developing character of our hero, but that is my interpretation. This is a well-shot and excellently directed film by Vikramaditya Motwane who had also given us gems like Udaan, Lootera and a nail-biting Trapped. The tight frames make you uneasy and raise the level of tension inside you. The soundtrack from Amit Trivedi successfully sets up the mood and helps in involving the audience with the film.
This movie spends its full runtime of 153 minutes on constructing an origin story so that it could make it as a franchise. For those of you expecting a film with plenty of high octane action sequences with the cape crusader performing some cool martial arts moves like Batman will get a bit disappointed as there are not many such sequences in the film because as told earlier, it primarily focuses on building up the character and if they plan to make a sequel then probably it would feature many action sequences in it to satisfy the thirst of an average superhero fan. I also found the editing to be poor and the length to be too long. While the first half grips you to the edge-of-your-seat, the second half drags for too long and loses steam more frequently. The villain in the movie was another disappointment as he was not menacing enough to scare the audience.
I have admired Harshvardhan Kapoor solely because of his choice of films. For a star son, his debut with Mirzya was something which is uncommon in the industry as mainly every actor coming from the land of nepotism chooses a cliched romantic "masala" film as his/her launching pad in the filmy world of Bollywood. His choice of doing films like Mirzya and Bhavesh Joshi Superhero shows that he wants to do different types of movies and I do respect him for that. It's just that he has to do a lot when it comes to acting, he is not that bad but needs to do work on a few things to achieve the title of an "actor". Priyanshu Painyuli was the major highlight of this film, and I would like to see him more in future movies. He is a terrific actor who needs a right script which would penetrate him more to push his boundaries. Shreiyah Sabharwal playing the romantic interest has nothing much to do in the film and is completely wasted here. Nishikant Kamat as the villain in the movie was also good in his part.
Bhavesh Joshi Superhero may not be the superhero film that you might be looking for, but it is worth a shot. You may want to hold on to your seats for a bit longer as there is also a post-credits scene in the movie.
