Dhadak Movie Review - Misses The Beat

Dhadak is the remake of the 2016 Marathi language film Sairat and is the story of  Madhukar and Parthavi who get attracted towards each other unaware of the turbulent fate the life has set in motion for them.

Cast - Janhvi Kapoor, Ishaan Khatter, Ashutosh Rana, Shridhar Watsar, Ankit Bisht

Directed By - Shashank Khaitan

Genre - Romance, Drama, Comedy

Prashant and Archana are replaced by Madhukar (Ishaan Khatter) and Parthavi (Janhvi Kapoor) respectively in this remake of Sairat in which the two of them, belonging to different castes, fall in love with each other, sparking conflict among their families.

Nagraj Manjule had given us a treat in the form of Sairat in 2016 which went on to become a success with both the critics and the audiences. Since then, many filmmakers have adapted it and churned out the film in there respective languages for the audiences who are foreign to the Marathi language. One such adaptation for the Hindi speaking audience comes from Bollywood which is produced by Dharma Productions and Zee Studios with the name Dhadak. The ones who have watched Sairat start to compare Dhadak with its source material instantly and begin to point out the changes done in this Shashank Khaitan directorial. However, these changes are the weakest point of this film as it takes away the magic which was created by Sairat. For starters, a scene in Sairat involving Archana drinking mineral water from a bottle and Prashant drinking it from a glass provides a subtle contrast between there backgrounds. This scene along with many others are removed from this remake which takes away the subtlety of the plot. Shashank Khaitan adapts the source as a launching pad for the debutants and does not understand the motive behind certain scenes from Sairat resulting them from being edited or taken out from this film. Hence, Dhadak loses its heartbeat and fails to connect on a more personal level. Even Madhukar's friends are reduced to mere caricatures who are just there to provide comic relief. There is no real bond present between them.

The one major change which is clearly seen is the shorter runtime of this movie. While Sairat clocked at 174 minutes, Dhadak closes off after 150 minutes allowing it to be crispy. But that is by no means a plus point for this movie as the shorter runtime makes it more breezy and fast-paced and doesn't allow its characters to develop enough for us to care about them. Manjule used his time in building up the leads which resulted in more depth and connectivity towards them. Due to this, the climax in Sairat felt like a hard blow to the stomach leaving us in pain and shock. It does have one of the most disturbing climax to be featured in a movie. Dhadak on the other hand due to its shallow treatment is not able to provide the shock value, although the climax has been changed to make it more dark and disturbing, it doesn't successfully pay off and feels more like a desperate attempt from the filmmaker's side.

Archana was layered Parthavi is not. Wearing Manish Malhotra designed clothes and having a perfect tied hair even during there Dharma styled poverty days takes away significant connectivity from the character. Madhukar is converted into a Varun Dhawan like character from the Dulhaniya series, and he even looks like Dhawan during certain scenes. That doesn't mean the actors are at fault. Ishaan Khattar who was last seen in Beyond The Clouds delivers far more effortlessly here. He is a fantastic and charming actor whom the girls will surely admire. Janhvi Kapoor is sweet and vulnerable who has the necessary acting chops and expressions to sway you away with her performance. Ashutosh Rana as the villain is too predictable and cliched. Wearing long hair and big moustache, his character can be compared with the one he played in Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhaniya.

The locations have been shot beautifully in Dharma Production style, providing a picturesque view in every frame. Songs given by Ajay-Atul are soul soothing and make for a blissful listening experience.

Dhadak can be best described as an aesthetic version of Sairat which fails to achieve its task miserably. The performances, beautiful locations and fantastic songs are the only redeeming factors of this film. Probably, the only way to enjoy this movie is by not watching Sairat.
