Genre - Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Drama

Barbara Thorson (Madison Wolfe) is a young teenage girl who believes that the Giants are coming to destroy her small town and she thinks of herself as a protector who can only kill the giants and save her town. She lives with her brother and an older sister, Karen (Imogen Poots). Being an elder sister, Karen is the one who looks after the home and acts as a financial supporter who feeds and looks after her siblings.

I Kill Giants is based on a graphic novel of the same name which was written by Joe Kelly and Ken Niimura. It has some well-created CGI giants that are astounding to look at; they are beautifully rendered. But not only the CGI part, but the whole film itself is also beautifully shot and has some gorgeous scenes which are a treat to the eyes. The cinematography of Rasmus Heise is gorgeous and stunning. The background score by Laurent Perez Del Mar sets the mood in motion with respect to the scene going on in the film.

For most of the part, it's the performance of Madison Wolfe that keeps you engaged in the film. She is a phenomenal actress who doesn't let your eyeballs move away from her. Even when sharing a scene with the other actors, it's almost impossible to look away from her. She effortlessly acts and sways you away with her engaging performance. She also played the character of Janet Hodgson in 2016 horror film The Conjuring 2. Sydney Wade as Sophia, who plays as a friend of Barbara was also impressive in the movie. She is always noticeable in every frame in which she is present because of her great performance and also because of the yellow jacket she wears throughout the film. Imogen Poots plays a very mature character, and she pulls it off brilliantly. Zoe Saldana as the counselor was also excellent. The character of Rory Jackson was not well-written and lacked depth; she plays a bully who tries to give a hard time to Barbara. She was the least developed character in the film, but still, Jackson gave her best to the role she was offered and didn't disappoint. Barbara's brother in the film was wasted, and it would have been the same without him. He was barely there in the movie and had just a scene or two.

At its core behind all the beautiful visuals and big CGI monsters, I Kill Giants packs in a touching and emotional story about the bond between a daughter and a mother. It also takes us inside the mind of a young teenager and shows us the perspective of the world and its problems through there eyes. The fear of losing someone close to us is something everyone has to experience one day as we know that death is inevitable. Being a teenager and a fan of the fantasy world, Barbara chooses her way to deal with this concept of death. Many people would be able to relate themselves with the protagonist as we all built a fantasy world in our childhood where we were the superheroes with powers trying to save our world. Of course, you would not have perceived the way or did the things that Barbara does in the film, but we did have our own imaginary thinking about the things in the world.

My issues with the film are towards the climax where a giant who is a Titan says a line which basically tells us the main theme of the movie. The director after visually showing most of the things just spoon feeds us by that dialogue from the Titan and I thought it to be an awful directing choice. If only Anders had been more trusting towards the audience and had respected them, then it would have been a lot better.

I Kill Giants is the story of grief, death and how we should be connected with our loved ones as no one else cares about us more than our family and the people close to us. The film uses stunning CGI and a not so likable character to tell this story which makes it up for a one time watch.
