The Tale Movie Review - An Unflinching Biography
The Tale doesn't shy away from displaying the horrors of a childhood trauma that forces introspection on one's life and the stories we remember to get through our toughest of times. Bold, sharp and unforgiving, The Tale is not for the faint-hearted.
Cast - Laura Dern, Isabelle Nelisse, Elizabeth Debicki, Jason Ritter, Ellen Burstyn, Common
Directed By - Jennifer Fox
Genre - Drama
The Tale is the true story of Jennifer Fox, who is also the director of this film, which tells us about the sexual abuse Fox went through during her childhood. At the age of 13, Fox wrote a story called "The Tale" which her mother finds out and this makes Jennifer, who is now in her 40's, to trace back and find out about the true unfoldings of the story.
Make no mistake, this is not revenge involving guns and spilling of blood (Wind River), or there are no billboards displaying the pain of the protagonist (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri). The Tale is more of an encounter which seems personal due to Fox's intimate way of telling a story which grips the audience and leaves them baffled.
With The Tale, Jennifer Fox has made an unflinching biography about her life which doesn't shy away from showing the brutality of child abuse through the use of visuals which makes up for an uncomfortable watch. There are scenes in the movie that would discomfort you to extreme levels, and I found myself shifting through various positions uncomfortably while watching this movie. It hits you hard with realism and knocks you down brutally. This is a courageous and unforgiving film that throws in disturbing imagery to your face which become painful to watch. You cannot even imagine the plight of a child going under sexual abuse and the film's depiction of it only further sends a chill down your spines. The last time I felt a series of emotions involving heartbreak, rage, and painfulness was when I watched Spotlight. The film not only relies on the protagonist's childhood abuse, which is, of course, the primary focus of the story, but it also takes time to show the relationship of Fox with her family especially her mother.
There are certain events in our childhood that we remember differently and the film uses this unreliability to deliver an impactful story. Being a documentary filmmaker, Jennifer Fox directs this film in the form of a documentary by adding some interesting twists to it. It is not shot in a way a conventional biography is shot; instead, it adds it's own twisty layers to it which make it look like a mystery movie like jigsaw puzzles piecing together to make sense. The way this movie transitions between the past and the present is pretty cool. It is a well-made movie, and the director has given her best by presenting the story in rather a unique way.
Laura Dern playing as Jennifer Fox was fantastic, the pain and confusion she goes through seemed believable because of her amazing performance. Isabelle Nelisse as the teenage Fox was spectacular to watch on screen. She is just 14 years old and is so exceptionally talented that I was amazed by her mind-blowing performance. At the age of 14, I was probably too busy lying on my bed, and here she is acting like a big star with such a grace that she almost overshadows every other actor sharing frame with her in the film. Ellen Burstyn who was terrific in Requiem For A Dream was also stunning in this movie.
The film has some disturbing scenes which would make you uncomfortable and is undoubtedly not for the faint-hearted. But The Tale handles its challenging subject with extraordinary care and sensitivity which makes it up for a powerful watch.
