Mission: Impossible - Fallout Movie Review: A Spectacular Action Piece
Mission: Impossible - Fallout has all the necessary ingredients cooked professionally for a mind-blowing action film which give you a massive amount of adrenaline rush and also manages to grip you tight during its breathtaking action sequences.
Cast - Tom Cruise, Henry Cavill, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Sean Harris, Michelle Monaghan, Vanessa Kirby
Directed By - Christopher McQuarrie
Genre - Action, Comedy
Based on the TV series Mission: Impossible by Bruce Geller, Mission: Impossible - Fallout is the sixth installment in the Mission: Impossible franchise and Christopher McQuarrie returns to the director's chair again making him the only person to direct more than one Mission: Impossible film. In Fallout, a terrorist group by the name of The Apostles led by the mysterious John Lark plan to use three plutonium cores for a nuclear attack and Ethan's (Tom Cruise) job is to find the plutonium before it falls in the wrong hands.
This is the sixth installment in the franchise, and while many films go awry and out of place by the time they reach here, Mission: Impossible surprisingly feels fresh and entertaining, and that is, in fact, one of the biggest strengths of this film. Tom Cruise proves yet again that "age is just a number" and you can still look dashing and physically fit even when you are 56 years old. Mission: Impossible films are known for using less green screen and CGI for the action sequences, and on top of that, Cruise performs his stunts without using any body double which makes up for an exhilarating and thrilling action sequences that stop your breath as you look spellbindingly at the screen holding your breath and pumping up with adrenaline. The fight scenes lack the use of background score and instead use the sound of punches and kicks which make it feel more real and authentic. The chase sequences, on the other hand, do have the background score running parallelly with the scene and are something that does surprise and leaves you stunned. This is, by all means, one of the greatest action films to have come out in a very long time and should be best cherished in theatres and if possible on an IMAX screen. Be it a scene taking place in a white bathroom with Cruise and Cavill or a chase sequence on a rooftop or the final scene involving the helicopters are all stunning to watch on screen. It does have some of the most beautiful set pieces to be present in an action film.
While the action is undoubtedly top-notch but what about the story? Well, here things become a bit tricky as the main story of this film has nothing new to offer and it is something you would have seen in million other movies. The subplots are a bit interesting to watch, and if only the main plot had been as exciting as the subplot then storywise too, it would have been more fun to watch. Although I did not see this point being mentioned in other reviews and maybe I would not have watched it clearly, but I think I saw an abrupt jump cut in a scene that was of course too quick to be noticed and I found it during the sequence which took place in an underground tunnel. Of course, I have watched it only once, and maybe I must have seen it wrong, but I do think I saw the cut between the scenes and I think if it is indeed present then it is an editing fault from the director's side and that too an immature one.
Tom Cruise sells the action sequences, and this is indeed "The Cruise Show" where he manages to entertain you throughout the runtime. Simon Pegg and Ving Rhames make up for a comical pair who are extremely likable. Vanessa Kirby as White Widow is a badass who looks smoking hot in the movie and her looks are enough to kill you instantly. Henry Cavill proves himself to be capable of playing a role outside Superman and my god the punches he delivers and the physique he wears are so admirably strong enough to give you a man crush on him.
Mission: Impossible - Fallout is fast, sleek and entirely action-packed with brilliant moments of stunts and chases. Fans of the genre would be very pleased with this movie as it not only has some cool moments of action, but it also has a smart story full of delicious twists that would satisfy the junkie inside you.
EDIT - The jump cuts I was talking about are censored scenes ordered by the CBFC which are there in the version running in the Indian theatres.
