Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster 3 Movie Review - The Bullets Get Exhausted

The game of lies and deceits are played again as Tigmanshu Dhulia returns with a third installment in the franchise. Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster 3, like all the sequels, runs out of steam leaving the Saheb and Biwi to do the heavy work.

Cast - Jimmy Shergill, Sanjay Dutt, Mahi Gill, Chitrangada Singh, Soha Ali Khan, Rishina Kandhari

Directed By - Tigmanshu Dhulia

Genre - Romance, Thriller, Drama

Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster 3 is the third installment in the franchise and a sequel to the 2013 film Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster Returns. For those who are familiar with the films, Aditya Pratap Singh a.k.a Saheb (Jimmy Shergill) is in jail because of the events that took place in the second installment and is trying his best to come out. Meanwhile, Madhavi Devi a.k.a Biwi (Mahi Gill) is enjoying the politics back in haveli and is making sure that Saheb doesn't make a comeback. Uday Singh a.k.a Gangster (Sanjay Dutt) is the new villain in this installment who is indeed different from the last two gangsters we had seen in the previous films. The plots are made for revenge, and double-crossing happens with our lead characters once again as they search for power in this bullet-ridden world.

Tigmanshu Dhulia successfully creates a franchise with three movies in them, and that is something impressive he has achieved. Many films either face a change in director or go into some studio problems before reaching this milestone but Dhulia achieves his goal, and that is something quite credible and praiseworthy. Of course, the films are treated like sequels, and they continue from where the last movie ends and that is one of the reasons why you would have to watch the previous two films before going into this one. The dysfunctional marriage and the weird relationship between the "Saheb" and "Biwi" is something you won't fully understand if you don't watch the previous installments and that gives you yet another reason to watch them. Dhulia's world of falling kings and fading royalties were quite a fun scenario to watch until now. Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster 3 in no way has the wittiness or charm of its predecessors, and this is by far the weakest installment of the franchise.

The weakest link in the movie is the "Gangster" who cannot even be called a gangster. The earlier two gangsters were driven by motive with dreams of royalty in their eyes. They felt real and cunning and both Randeep Hooda and Irrfan Khan being incredible actors were successful in investing you in them. The presence of a superstar like Sanjay Dutt makes the "Gangster" feel a bit fictional and you don't entirely relate to him also because of the fact that there is this "Baba Theme Song" being played in the background whenever Dutt's character breaks a bone or does something villainy. The film dissolves in Dutt's arms and doesn't stop glorifying him or even making him look like a human, a good-hearted gangster with ethics. I can't help but wonder if this is Tigmanshu Dhulia's version of Sanju. Although it would be unfair to blame Dutt as he does gives his best, but his character is written and portrayed in a way that leaves you disappointed especially after seeing the characters of Hooda and Irrfan. The background score of the film is another drawback which feels like a loud, ear-piercing noise being played in the background instead of being used as an element to heighten the tension. The direction of Dhulia feels sloppy and trippy and doesn't have the same edgy effect as it had in the previous films.

That doesn't mean that the film has nothing good going for it. Jimmy Shergill proves himself again to be an exceptionally talented actor who cannot go wrong even if the script is mediocre. He gives his best and rises even at times when the film seems to be going down. Mahi Gill as the sexy and seducing "Biwi" is irreplaceable and has that smoky eyes and sultry features which makes her hard to resist for both the characters and the audience. Rishina Kandhari who is a well-known TV actress makes a brief appearance in the movie by burning up the screen with Jimmy Shergill, and this is the second time she has appeared in a feature film with Ek Villain being the first where she played the role of a Nurse. Chitrangada Singh and Soha Ali Khan were wasted with the latter being present only for a few minutes making her appearance feel more like a cameo. Chitrangada does a wonderful job during a dance sequence where she moves her body gracefully. The steamy sequences for which the series is known for are also retained in this installment, and while they are not lengthy, they are definitely raunchy enough to raise your hormones. The huge sets, the shining gold jewelries and expensive dresses are also gorgeous to look at.

Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster 3, unfortunately, is not as enjoyable and gripping like the previous two installments in the franchise but the presence of actors like Jimmy and Mahi do make it watchable and worth for a one time watch.
