Soorma Movie Review - The Cliched Biopic
Soorma is based on the life of hockey player Sandeep Singh who makes a great comeback after a gunshot injury leaves him paralysed. Directed by Shaad Ali, Soorma as a film has nothing new to offer and falls under the same old cliches of other Bollywood biopics.

An esteemed hockey player Sandeep Singh (Diljit Dosanjh) is left paralysed after he gets wounded by an accidental gunshot. But he overcomes the paralysis and makes a big comeback. This is the basic premise of Soorma and the incredible story of Sandeep Singh.
After love and romance, biopics are the new addiction of the Bollywood industry who seems to be getting obsessed with it. After Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's successful outing in 2013 with Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, there had been an increase in the production of such biopics which come out almost every year and tell us the story behind the successful making of our idols and how they achieved such great milestones. While these stories are inspiring, it is also a fact that almost every biopic that comes out "looks same, feels same". They have fallen under the cliches of a typical biopic movie which consists of a list of things that are check marked as the film progresses. From the over dramatisation of the romance to the musical montages of the workout sessions are all placed in the movie. Soorma too doesn't have anything new or groundbreaking to offer, and like almost all the other biopics, it's the character and not the film that makes this movie watchable. The stunning music by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy also gets lost in this 131 minutes long predictable journey featuring flying shots of our National Flag invoking the patriotism within us. It also has some of the worst choreographed sports sequences in recent times, and you can almost see how the trained actors pass around the ball while stopping in between to perform a fancy trick. When our hero gets crippled by the gunshot, the film doesn't dive into the problems or insecurities he faces and just hovers over them by showing us a few shots of it taking a more shallow approach. Director Shaad Ali who previously gave us the disastrous Ok Jaanu has somewhat given us a better film this time but its still not as good as his 2002 Saathiya.
Soorma means warrior and our protagonist fights like a warrior on the field scoring goals and making us proud. Diljit Dosanjh is a terrific actor, and I have admired him since the first time I saw him in Udta Punjab. He bears the physical resemblance and self-confidence of a sportsperson with ease and leaves no stone unturned by fully getting under the skin of Sandeep Singh. Diljit is the highlight of the film and has enough charm to carry it on his shoulder. Tapsee Pannu as Harpreet playing the love interest of Sandeep has sadly nothing much to do here but still manages to give a decent performance. Vijay Raaz is the coolest guy in the film mouthing some funny one-liners which crack you up instantly. He is a great actor and a treat to watch in every movie he works in. Angad Bedi playing the character of Bikramjeet Singh, the elder brother of Sandeep Singh, also manages to give a serviceable performance here.
There was no reason for Soorma being an average movie as it already contained enough masala in it which should have been best left untampered. This Diljit Dosanjh starrer fails to rise like a warrior.
