Happy Phirr Bhag Jayegi Movie Review - Run Baby Run
Happy Phirr Bhag Jayegi is the sequel to the 2016 sleeper hit film Happy Bhag Jayegi with both the movies being directed by Mudassar Aziz. This is nothing but a desperate attempt from the director's side to stretch the plot unnecessarily.
Cast - Sonakshi Sinha, Diana Penty, Jimmy Sheirgill, Ali Fazal, Jassi Gill, Piyush Mishra, Aparshakti Khurana, Jason Tham
Directed By - Mudassar Aziz
Genre - Comedy, Romance, Drama
The plot of this film is simple. Harpreet Kaur or Happy (Sonakshi Sinha) gets mistaken to be as another Happy (Diana Penty) and gets kidnapped by some goons led by Chang (Jason Tham). They want to use her for there personal motives, but due to this kidnapping gone wrong and Happy's brilliant trait of running from almost any situation, this film gets an excuse to meander for nearly 135 minutes and feels nothing short of a desperate attempt from the director's side to stretch the plot unnecessarily which unfolds in Shanghai.
I have only watched the prequel once, and as far as I remember, it was an enjoyable one-time watch, and I had a good time with it. It also went on to become a sleeper hit which led to the making of this sequel which gets bigger but not better. Sequels are generally made to rake in more money from the audience, and they are unnecessarily stretched to satisfy fans, or it tries to bank on the success of its prequel. In the process, they forget as to why those first instalments were successful in the first place and lust for money churn out a disposable plot by including some additional big casts. It is rare to get a good sequel nowadays.
Happy Phirr Bhag Jayegi too suffers from this make-it-big sequel syndrome and barely delivers the fun which the first managed to give. It is in this movie where you start to miss the original Happy and wish she could have been there for more. I would be lying if I said that I was expecting something out-of-the-box from this movie. No, I saw the trailers, and I exactly knew what I was going in for, it's just that I was not expecting this film to be dumbed down up to this extent as the prequel was well-made and well-directed but this one disappoints in every way possible. Just when I thought that Aziz's direction has gotten improved after the disastrous Dulha Mil Gaya (2010) and he had found redemption with Happy Bhag Jayegi, along came this film which significantly watered down my hopes and expectations with him.
The film started on a promising note, and I was enjoying the movie up to an extent when during a chase sequence I realised it was going nowhere and the plot was getting stretched unnecessarily. The songs made it worse. Like many Bollywood films, they were put in as an excuse to extend the runtime of the film. It went on and on to a point where I started to wish for it to get over.
But it is not entirely devoid of humour as there are scenes which make you laugh, or at least they manage to put a smile on your face. These scenes involved the stunning and amusing duo of Bagga (Jimmy Sheirgill) and Usman Afridi (Piyush Mishra). Every minute of the film involving these two on screen was hilarious and enjoyable to watch. Perhaps, they were the only redemption in this caricature of a movie which mostly contained jokes referencing the same Chinese faces and stupid character names like Fa Q. The script ran all over the place and got exhausted long before the credits began to roll.
Sonakshi Sinha will easily become the victim here. People will thrash her for the film's underperformance when in fact it is the script and the direction which is at fault here. Of course, Sinha's acting is also at fault, but she did try to give her best here. It's the movie that really makes her look bad because I have seen her perform exceptionally in films like Lootera and Ittefaq. As mentioned before, Jimmy and Piyush are the showstoppers who don't fail to amuse you again in this sequel. I had not seen Jassi Gill perform before in any of the films and so I think he was okay here and didn't do anything memorable. Diana and Ali in there cameos were effective and even funny during some parts.
All in all, Happy Phirr Bhag Jayegi is that sequel which shouldn't have been made and did nothing to elevate the humour and wittiness of the first one. It can easily be given a pass in the theatres and if you want to watch it then wait for its digital release or watch it on your TV.
