Won't You Be My Neighbor? Movie Review - The Neighbor We Need
Morgan Neville's documentary film is about the life of Fred Rogers, a person of great influence among the children who used television to guide them towards the right path.

People living or born during the 1960s may be familiar with Fred Rogers show titled Mister Roger's Neighborhood. He had inspired many with his charming and loving personality and with his show, he targeted towards the children and served as a major influence among them. He lived a not-so-happy childhood, and perhaps this was the reason why he wanted to rescue and educate the young minds around him and thought that television was a great tool to achieve this goal.
Since its screening at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, this movie had generated a lot of hype around it. Thanks to the overwhelming response it got which even continued and grew more strongly after its theatrical release on June 8, 2018, leading to its current rating of 99% on Rotten Tomatoes. Not only it got acclaimed critically, but it also went on to become the highest-grossing documentary of all time making it an hit among the audience members too. Naturally, I got excited to watch it, and I did have a good time with it.
This a well researched and well-shot film which slowly unpacks the life of Fred Rogers and shows us the pain and hard work that Rogers put in his show. His dedication clearly demonstrated his love towards the children, and he did want to bring a change into the society through a medium which was and even now exploited by many. Rogers thought of the television as an important medium to converse his thoughts carefully to the children. He touched on sensitive issues like death and divorce which is something you don't discuss with your child, but he thought it to be essential and communicated his views on the topic maturely and in a way that they understood it.
Before going in to watch a biography of someone of this status, there are doubts concerning the film as you fear if it will all be about the highlights and achievements praising the person for the whole duration of the movie. This film balanced both his success and criticism, telling us everything we need to know about his life and that too in the most engaging way possible. I don't watch a lot of documentaries, and I watched this because of all the buzz surrounding it, I must say I was taken aback by it as I was watching it in awe. Never thought I would get so involved with a documentary film that it would make me laugh and even fill my eyes with tears.
I think the main reason why this film works so well is because of the main character in it. Fred Rogers is someone who is passionate about his work and believes in positively changing the world. His show inspired children's and his character the people around him. He died on February 27, 2003, at the age of 74 and even after all these years while watching TV, his presence feels much needed.
Morgan Neville's 2013 documentary film 20 Feet From Stardom won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in 2014 as well as a Grammy Award for Best Music Film. That film was about the lives of the background singers. With Won't You Be My Neighbor?, he again proves to be a master in documentary filmmaking. This movie will touch your heart, and you can watch it if you are looking for something inspirational.
