Filled with vibrant colours and frames, Midnight in Paris is a perfect movie for those looking for a getaway from there daily and monotonous life. It offers ideal escapism that can be enjoyed by anyone.

Genre - Fantasy, Romance, Comedy

Gil (Owen Wilson) is a Hollywood screenwriter who is struggling to finish his first novel about a man working at a nostalgia shop. He is about to marry his fiancee Inez (Rachel McAdams) who is very different from him with respect to taste, choice of living and every other possible thing. He loves walking in rain, and she dislikes the idea of getting wet in it. The opposites don't seem to be attracted in this case. During a night of wine tasting, Gil gets drunk and decides to walk back to his hotel. He gets lost and sits down on the stairs when the clock strikes 12 and a 1920s car stops in front of him taking him where he really wanted to go - in the past.

One thing which is evident while watching Midnight in Paris is the vibrant and beautiful colours that seem to pop out of the frames providing a picturesque view of the film. It looks like a rainbow with stunning colours scattered here and there providing an aesthetic viewpoint. Woody Allen has directed a gorgeous fantasy world which starts as a dream, ends like a dream and feels like a dream. Exploring the concept of nostalgia and modernism, it shows us how we like to cherish moments and things of past which stops us from moving forward with time. We don't live in the present and prefer to visit the good or bad things done in the past which eventually takes away all the pleasure from the life. There is a scene between Gil and Adriana (Marion Cotillard) which wonderfully shows how no one is ever satisfied with the present and how the people living in the 20s may feel the time before them was golden and those people, in turn, may feel the time before them was much better. No one appreciates the time they are living in today.

The film also uses wide-angle shots which fully immerses us into this gorgeous city of Paris. Sometimes the camera tracks the character in a long unbroken take following the character's movement that too in wide angle shot. I found this technique to be magical as it soothes your eyes and never lets you turn away from the screen. The cinematography by Darius Khondji makes sure that you book your tickets to Paris right away. The star is, of course, Allen here as he masterfully writes and directs a film which can sway your hearts. Ebert in his review said that Woody Allen must have had a great time writing this screenplay and you can see why this statement is so true as the film itself is very charming.

Woody Allen began his career as a comedy writer in the 1950s, and that is one of the reasons why the jokes always landed in the film. He is experienced with comedy and has integrated it beautifully in the movie. What made the jokes more fun were the performances by the actors. Owen Wilson is a natural actor and breathes life into his kind and lovable character. He is one of those rare and talented actors who seamlessly transitions into any role with ease. His comic timing is superb. Rachel McAdams is always a treat to watch on screen; I can watch her do anything for hours together without getting bored or sleepy. Michael Sheen as the pseudo-intellectual named Paul, Inez's friend, is someone who loves to display his well of knowledge publicly and is also someone who doesn't like to be pointed out and even if someone tries to argue or correct him, he doesn't change his side and stands firmly on his ground. He looked almost identical to Simon Pegg, and I initially thought of him as Simon Pegg. It was only after watching the film I looked up on the internet and found out that it was Michael Sheen. In this ensemble cast, everybody gets a chance to shine, and no side character is treated as disposable which is another highlight of this movie.

For a film so entertaining and full of life, pointing out flaws comes off as nitpicks like no proper explanation is given as to how and why at midnight these historical figures come to life? But you don't bother asking questions as in the end, the film manages to entertain you, and in doing so, it fulfils its objective. I for a fact was watching this film with a smile on my face which was present for the most part of the film. As said earlier, it is like a dream and dreams are not always explainable. As an audience, you would be immersed in this world laughing and enjoying yourself and also taking away something meaningful from it. There is tons of warmth and excitement here and also something valuable for everyone.
