Mulk Movie Review - The Courtroom Drama
Mulk has a talented cast which makes sure the message this film wants to deliver reaches undiluted to the people watching it. This is probably Sinha's best feature to date.

Advocate Murad Ali Mohammed (Rishi Kapoor) is about to turn 65 years old, and his family members are gearing up for a grand celebration. Aarti (Taapsee Pannu) too joins the party along with many people including the ones who are vegetarian but don't mind eating Murad's delicious Mutton Korma. These "other people" are Hindus who will be seen staring at Murad later in the film. So, what happens is that Bilaal's (Manoj Pahwa) son Shahid (Prateik Babbar) turns out to be a terrorist who gets killed in an encounter by SSP Danish Javed (Rajat Kapoor). Due to Shahid's actions, the whole family suffers and loses there honour, and now it's up to them to reclaim it back.
At the beginning of the film, we get a long unbroken take which introduces us to the characters in this film. Their happy faces seem too good to be true, and of course, things change for the worse. Anubhav Sinha, known for films like Tum Bin 1 and 2, Dus and Ra.One, has created a social drama that dares to ask questions like - Does the length of a beard determine your patriotism? How can you differentiate between a good and bad Muslim? Are all Muslims terrorists or are all terrorists Muslims? This film along with many others (Jolly LLB, Pink) uses the intense courtroom sequences to raise these critical questions in front of the audience. The scenes involving lines that would make your hearts pound are also included in the film. The first half acts as a setup for the power-packed second half which is undoubtedly the best part of the film.
It is to be noted that the people who initially were seen laughing begin to clap for Aarti showing the ability of the general public to be swayed by anything. It displays the naivety of people who get influenced by big words even before the action takes place. This film will surely come as a surprise to those who don't consider Sinha to be a good director. He has managed to make a serious drama film which impacts anyone who sees it. This is something no one hoped Sinha would be able to pull off but he did manage to do it most intensively.
Generally, the writer's ideologies are presented in the form of a debate that goes on between the prosecution and defense lawyers. Mulk follows the same approach we have come to expect from these kinds of films, but I would be lying if I said that I didn't enjoy any of it. Taapsee Pannu's electrifying intensity with which she delivers her lines in the court is a treat to watch. A scene involving cross-examination of Danish by Aarti was one of the most thrilling scenes I had watched in recent times. Her transformation from a silent observer to a roaring tigress is something to look out for in the film. Rishi Kapoor doesn't fail to impress; his tired and sad eyes makes you want to hug him. Sinha makes a smart decision concerning Prateik Babbar by casting him in a role which doesn't bother his presence much whenever he is on screen. All the other actors were fantastic in there parts with special mention to the very talented Manoj Pahwa who steals the show and your heart with his stellar performance.
Mulk may contain some heart-wrenching scenes or chest thumping dialogues but in the end what really impacted me were some silent scenes like the one with Javed sitting in an empty courtroom introspecting his decisions and actions he took and justified which is what the film wants its audience to do.
