A Simple Favor Movie Review - A Twisty Affair
A vlogger decides to find her best friend when she suddenly disappears from the town. A Simple Favor is sharp, edgy and keeps things engaging all the while by providing a good time.
Cast - Anna Kendrick, Blake Lively, Henry Golding, Andrew Rannells
Directed By - Paul Feig
Genre - Comedy, Thriller, Suspense, Mystery
Everybody needs a friend right? Someone to hang out or simply to have a drink with. A best friend is a necessity, and every person craves for a friend forever. So, our single mother Stephanie (Anna Kendrick) meets her best friend Emily (Blake Lively) at an elementary school where both their son's study. Emily invites Stephanie to her house where they have a drink and share some secrets with each other. They start getting close to each other and become best friends. The film's title A Simple Favor refers to that simple favour which Emily asks Stephanie to do which is to pick up her son from the school after which Emily disappears. By the way, Stephanie also runs a housewife-themed vlog where she tells about the recipes or other things to help a homemaker in her day to day life. After the incident, she also uses it to explain the disappearance of Emily which is the opening sequence of this film.
A Simple Favor is based on a novel of the same name by Darcey Bell. The screenplay of this movie is written by Jessica Sharzer who deserves applause. The foot-tapping music by Theodore Shapiro is exciting and on-point. Also kudos to the excellent cinematography of John Schwartzman who has shot the film gorgeously and elegantly. It also has a cool opening and closing credits rolling for it.
Directed by Paul Feig, A Simple Favor does a lot of favour to the audience by delivering a twisty ride filled with humour and manipulation. I was mostly surprised by the treatment this film gave to this genre by adding some stylistic direction here. It also uses the colours on the wall for the storytelling. For example, in a scene taking place between the two characters, it hints the start of a romantic sequence by showing the colour red on the wall. You can say that this movie is an example of "style with substance". It doesn't let you get bored and keeps you engaged throughout.
The credit for this should be given to the two main leads of the film. They are beautiful to look at and never let you take your eyes off them. Anna Kendrick as the hot and funny single mother delivers fantastically in the film. Blake Lively as the secret badass who has something up her sleeve makes up for a slick and stunning performance. Their chemistry together on screen is both fiery and electrifying. Henry Golding who was also seen in Crazy Rich Asians gives a wonderful performance of a husband whose weakness is the sexuality of women. There are some interesting side characters here like a group of three parents who appear now and then for delivering funny one-liners and make up for a good comic relief.
Its climax may feel far-fetched to some, but you cannot deny the fun it delivers. It plants everything methodically from the beginning for a payoff in the finale where everything ties up neatly in place. A Simple Favor is that kind of movie which I want to see being made more often. It makes up for a refreshing ride which manages to cheer and surprise even the hard-hearted ones.
