Batti Gul Meter Chalu Movie Review - Lights Out
A man who opens a Printing Press commits suicide when he is unable to pay the electricity bill. His friend decides to take the matter in his hand and fights to provide justice for his best friend.
Cast - Shahid Kapoor, Shraddha Kapoor, Divyendu Sharma, Yami Gautam
Directed By - Shree Narayan Singh
Genre - Romance, Comedy, Drama
For those of you who have seen the trailers, you already know what this film is all about, and almost everything has been previously revealed in the trailer. Batti Gul Meter Chalu is a love triangle between Sundar (Divyendu Sharma), Sushil (Shahid Kapoor) and Nauti (Shraddha Kapoor). With this triangle comes a social drama focusing on the electricity scam throwing light (no pun intended) on the reality.
But everything seems pointless here. The amount of buildup and some scenes in the first half provoke no excitement from the audience. For example, Nauti decides to spend a week with each of them before choosing any one of them as her suitable boyfriend or her groom to be. Thanks to the trailers that we already know that Sundar will commit suicide and so it all seems a waste of time. Oh yeah, there is a twist here which does nothing much for the movie. I think maybe the makers were very confident about this big twist and so they decided to show everything in the trailer.
Talking of pointless things, the story is narrated through two individuals Kalyan (Badrul Islam) and Vikas (Sharib Hashmi) who in a black and white frame are shown travelling in a bus. This movie would have been no different if you were to take this sequence out from it. One look at the Wikipedia page and you see "used satirically to portray development" written in front of both the characters name. Well, it does not make any difference here.
Shree Narayan Singh had previously worked as an editor in films like A Wednesday, Special 26 and Baby before making his directorial debut with Yeh Jo Mohabbat Hai and last year's Toilet: Ek Prem Katha. I have not watched Yeh Jo Mohabbat Hai, and I didn't like Toilet: Ek Prem Katha. If you compare, then there is not much difference between Toilet and Batti Gul. Both of them feature an ordinary man who turns lifesaver of the town when a personal tragedy strikes them. What changes are the issue (toilets to electricity) and the actor (Akshay Kumar to Shahid Kapoor).
The main problem with these movies is that they prefer motive over filmmaking. They think that the good intentions are more than enough for making a film and they spend little to no time on characters and plot.
Shahid Kapoor shifts from acting to overacting, and after a time, his funny accent feels more of a headache than comic relief. Talking in such an accent in a public place with your friends is one thing but doing the same thing in a court in front of the judge is another thing. Of course, you may argue that after all, they wanted to make it funny but there are things he does that can just not be taken lightly like his behaviour with the defense lawyer Gulnaar Rizvi (Yami Gautam). While we are on the subject, the court sequences here are filled with cringy humour and an irritating audience who laughs and even starts clapping after every big dialogue that comes out from Sushil. Shraddha Kapoor is there for being cute and tries to bring emotional weight but mostly fails. Divyendu Sharma overshadows the other two actors with his always reliable performance and is the only one here who gives a compelling performance.
It was a pity that I had to watch this film after seeing the very unusual Manto as both of them released at the same time. The trailer was probably more bearable and effective than this entire 175-minute film. If only they start giving the filmmaking process an equal priority as they give to the content, it will benefit the movie in the long run.
