BlacKkKlansman Movie Review - Black And White
Set in the 1970s, BlacKkKlansman is about a black police officer who infiltrates and exposes the Ku Klux Klan or simply KKK. Socially relevant in today's time, this is a must-watch for everybody.
Cast - John David Washington, Adam Driver, Laura Harrier, Topher Grace, Ryan Eggold, Jasper Pääkkönen, Ashlie Atkinson
Directed By - Spike Lee
Genre - Comedy, Drama, Crime
During the 1970s in Colorado Springs, Ron Stallworth (John David Washington) is hired as the first black officer in the Colorado Police Department. Initially, he is assigned to work in the records room where he faces racial comments from his co-workers. Feeling confident in himself, he requests to go undercover and is assigned his first job. One day while reading the paper, he comes across an advertisement regarding the Ku Klux Klan and calls on the given number to join them. Of course, he pretends to be a white man on the phone and speaks with the president Walter Breachway (Ryan Eggold). He then sends his Jewish coworker, Flip Zimmerman (Adam Driver), to the meeting and together they attempt to bust the KKK.
Given the fact that this film deals with a serious topic like racism, you will be surprised to find how hilarious this movie is. It never lets the seriousness of its subject take over the tone of the film and manages to balance both the lighter and the darker parts equally. One moment you will laugh uncontrollably, and in the next, you will find yourself getting disgusted by the mentality of the people during those times which leaves you disturbed.
Director Spike Lee puts everything out there and doesn't shy away from shedding light on the brutality of those dark times. Known for making films like Inside Man (2006) and Oldboy (2013), this is easily one of his best films in recent times. He handles the subject carefully and makes it a mass entertainer as he really wants everybody to see it. This movie is based on an outrageous true story, and it does have some historical inaccuracies in it. But of course, every film which is based on a true story tweaks the events in some way or the other so that it becomes cinematically enjoyable to see. Many may find it an issue, but it didn't bother me. I was riveted by it from start to finish. The end credits break your heart, and it shows the relevance of the problem in the recent times.
The chemistry between the cop buddies was electrifying. The film slowly builds up a relationship between them, and you start to care and enjoy watching them together. Talking of build up, the way this film develops the characters and the situations leading up to that nail-biting finale was fantastic to watch. The development paid off in the most satisfying way possible.
Another notable thing is the film's subtle use of music in creating tension and setting up the atmosphere. Scored by Terence Blanchard, the soundtrack was breathtaking here and raised the impact of the scenes. Also, Chayse Irvin's cinematography further helped in transporting us in the period in which the film is set.
John David Washington, son of Denzel Washington, with his fantastic performance was mind-blowing in the movie. He impresses with his performance leaving you wanting more from him. Adam Driver was also stunning, and whenever he is there with the members of KKK, you wish he doesn't get caught. Ryan Eggold, Jasper Pääkkönen and Topher Grace as the bad guys levitated the tension in the film with there presence.
My issue with the film probably regards the pacing as it got slow during sometimes. But that is it, as this is one of the best films of this year and a sure-shot recommendation from me. It gives you goosebumps by the time it ends.
