In 1952, a priest and a novitiate were sent at an abbey in Romania after a nun takes her life. Little do they know about this mysterious unholy place which hides a demonic creature in the form of a nun ready to take there lives and soul.

Cast - Demian Bichir, Taissa Farmiga, Jonas Bloquet, Bonnie Aarons, August Maturo, Charlotte Hope, Ingrid Bisu

Directed By - Corin Hardy

Genre - Horror, Gothic, Mystery, Thriller

The Nun is yet another spin-off film after Annabelle from The Conjuring universe which further explores the roots of this franchise and establishes a connection to the Warrens. This is actually before The Conjuring, its the beginning of the several hauntings that come in front of the Warrens.

The film begins with a recap showing us scenes from James Wan's The Conjuring 2 where we see a demonic nun by the name of Valak (a horrifying Bonnie Aarons). It then takes us back to an abbey in Romania in 1952 and shows us two sisters fatal encounter with Valak where one dies, and the other takes her life. Due to this incident, a troubled priest Father Burke (Demian Bichir) along with a young novitiate Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga) are sent by the Vatican's for the investigation. There they meet Frenchie (Jonas Bloquet), the man who informed about the death in the first place, who takes them to the abbey.

Now first things first, this is a gorgeous looking film and even one which is very well-directed. The lush and beautiful cinematography by Maxime Alexandre provides for a breath-taking experience which really immerses you in the period in which the film is set. The costumes are attractive, and so are the set pieces. Corin Hardy's direction is pretty good here, and he proves his stunning capability in the movie. His love for this film can be seen through his vision. For me, this is where the positives stop as the rest of the movie drenches in sin.

For a film marketed as the darkest in the franchise, this is barely scary and fails to provide that chill on your back which one expects from a movie coming from Wan. Of course, Annabelle (2014) was bad, but it found redemption with its sequel, but one surely didn't expect a film like this when the trailers were chilly and exciting. I must confess, I was looking forward to watching this one and by the time I left the theatre, I was not entirely disappointed, but it was also not a satisfying experience. It is filled with jump scares, and while some were good, the others were bland.

One can't help but wonder that The Nun is a missed opportunity which is sad as it had a lot of potential in it. A terrifying demonic nun, Valak, who can give nightmares to even the strongest of hearts out there (a scene revealing her entirely standing on top of water gave me goosebumps), a talented cast and a masterful director, everything was top-notch here. But the writing took a toll here, and everything turned for the worse.

Following the same horror cliches and the familiar tropes that many previous horror films have featured, The Nun offers nothing new to take away and leaves you wanting for more. The characters make stupid choices and don't understand the importance of teamwork, why the hell do they split up or wander around in the corridors alone in the night? It also takes a leap regarding the decisions made by the characters. Of course, they reach the right conclusion but that feels jumpy, and one wonders exactly how did they deduce it. All the characters lacked depth which resulted in no real connection with them although the performances were terrific.

Demian Bichir as the disturbed father and Taissa Farmiga as the sweet and daring nun were incredible, but their roles made them serviceable. Jonas Bloquet provides comic relief here which landed sometimes but mostly felt annoying. The horror doesn't work here, and on top of that, the introduction of a comic character further removes the stress and tension from the movie.

Perhaps if this film had come out in 2015 or 2016, I would have enjoyed it more, but as I had seen many horror masterpieces including Hereditary this year, I didn't find it as engaging and thrilling as I probably would have a few years ago when my exposure towards the films was less. Valak is a terrifying entity who can scare the daylight out of you, but sadly the same cannot be said for The Nun.  Probably you can give it a watch if you are curious about the universe of The Conjuring and how this movie connects with it.
